Work History
Tin was first recognized in the placer concentrates from Dublin Gulch in 1940. The source was staked as First, etc cl (55276) in Aug/43 by E.R. Sheppard and H. Ray for Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd, a Noranda subsidiary, which carried out hand trenching and sampling. The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd (Cominco) is reported to have carried out additional trenching and to have driven a cross-cut below the vein in 1945.
Restaked as Arpa cl 1-40 (Y31687) in Feb/67 by C. Provencher and J.H. Boyce; as Stew cl 1-2 (Y33327) in Apr/70; as Rhonda cl 1-4 (Y68349) in Jul/72 by R. Holway; and as Dog cl 1-22 (Y97149) in Nov/74 by H. Fromme.
Restaked as DG cl 1-56 (YA14944) in Apr/77 by G. Dickson. The DG claims were optioned to Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd in the spring of 1978, which carried out prospecting, reconnaissance and detailed geological mapping, geochemical rock, soil and stream sediment sampling, trenching and magnetometer surveying from 1978-81. The claims were transferred back to Dickson in Jan/86.
Can-Pro Development Ltd optioned the DG claims as part of a larger block in the Dublin Gulch area in 1989. Ivanhoe Goldfields Ltd optioned Can-Pro's claims in 1991 and subsequently optioned them to Amax Gold (B.C.) Ltd, which in 1992 drilled 2 rotary holes (216.4 m); one each on the Smoky cl 52 and DG cl 9.
In Aug/94 First Dynasty Mines Ltd acquired Ivanhoe Goldfields Ltd. In 1995, First Dynasty and in 1996 its wholly owned subsidiary, New Millennium Mining Ltd carried out a major drilling program to outline a resource/reserve on the Eagle Zone (Minfile Occurrence #106D 025). The companies also carried out diamond drilling on Potato Hill (Minfile Occurrence #106D 026) to test for mineralization under the proposed heap leach pad area. In Sept/95 Ivanhoe staked fractional Roni cl 1-13 (YB64630) in and around the Smoky claims.
Restaked as Tin Dome cl 1-12 (YC02842) in Aug/2001 by B. Walden and K. Benson who carried out prospecting and rock geochemical sampling in 2001 and 2002.
Capsule Geology
The area is underlain by deformed Late Proterozoic Yusezyu Formation clastic rocks of the Hyland Group that have been intruded by Late Cretaceous Tombstone Plutonic Suite stocks, dykes and sills. Alteration and gold and tungsten mineralization is directly associated with the intrusions.
Resinous, yellow-to-brown, finely crystalline cassiterite occurs in a vein or breccia zone about 0.9 m wide, which cuts quartzite of the Hyland Group. Coarse fragments of float are composed of smaller, angular fragments of vein quartz, quartzite and quartz-mica schist, packed in with chlorite, tourmaline, vein quartz, limonite and minor pyrite. The mineralization shows evidence of extreme brecciation and fine green tourmaline is particularly abundant.
Lenses of tourmaline up to 7 cm long and 1.3 cm wide consist of aggregates of finely crystalline hairs. Cassiterite is seldom visible to the naked eye and occurs as small patches or nests or as disseminated crystals. Three channel samples by the Geological Survey of Canada assayed 1.53%, 1.53% and 0.83% tin. Cominco's sampling averaged less than 0.3% tin (all assay information from Geological Survey of Canada Bulletin 111, p. 85).
Work carried out in 2002 on the Tin Dome claims was focused to the north in the vicinity of Minfile Occurrence #106D 023 and consisted of prospecting and geochemical sampling which failed to locate the source of massive arsenopyrite float boulders discovered the previous year.
