Work History
Staked as Barber cl 1-17 (59497) in Sep/49 by E.H. Barker, who explored with bulldozer trenching and ground sluicing until 1962. The property was optioned by Conwest Exploration Company Ltd in 1952, by Stride Exploration & Development Company Ltd in 1956, by Prospectors Airways Company Ltd in 1960 and by Peso Silver Mines Ltd in 1962. The Eleven cl (55381) were staked 1.6 km north on Fisher Creek in Oct/45.
Restaked within Smoky cl 1-82 (YA17930) in Apr/78 by a joint venture between Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation and Queenstake Resources Ltd, which mapped in 1981. Some of the Smoky claims were transferred to G. Dickson in Feb/86 and the remainder to Queenstake in Aug/86. Queenstake optioned Dickson's claims in Apr/91 and trenched later in the year. In Oct/94 Queenstake transferred its interest in the Smoky and Mole claims to Ivanhoe Goldfields Ltd.
Can-Pro Development Ltd optioned the Smoky and adjoining Mole claims as part of a larger block in the Dublin Gulch area in 1989. Ivanhoe Goldfields Ltd optioned Can-Pro's claims in 1991 and subsequently optioned them to Amax Gold (B.C.) Ltd, which drilled 2 rotary holes (112.8 m) on the Smoky 5 and 27 claims in 1992.
In Aug/94 First Dynasty Mines Ltd acquired Ivanhoe Goldfields Ltd. In 1995, First Dynasty and in 1996 its wholly owned subsidiary, New Millennium Mining Ltd carried out a major drilling program to outline a core resource/reserve on the Eagle Zone (Minfile Occurrence #106D 025). The company also carried out diamond drilling on Potato Hills (Minfile Occurrence #106D 026) to test the proposed heap leach pad area.
M.J. Moreau tied on Rex cl 1-8 (YB02241) to the south and Mole cl 1-6 (YB02249) and cl 13-18 (YB02255) to the southwest in Apr/88, and restaked the Rex cl 1-8 (YB03271) and Mole 1-6 (YB03787) and cl 13-14 (YB03793) in August, 1990.
Capsule Geology
The area has not yet been remapped by the Yukon Geological Survey however C. Roots (1997) of the Geological Survey of Canada under contract with the Exploration and Geological Services Division (now part of the Yukon Geological Survey) remapped topographic map sheet 105M located directly to the south in the mid-1990's. In 2003 Gordey and Makepeace released a geological compilation of the Yukon which covered this area.
The occurrence consists of quartz veins containing pyrite and jamesonite that occur in breccia zones near the contact between a smal Late Cretaceous granitic stock and schist of the Late Proterozoic-Early Cambrian Hyland Group. A sulphide-rich grab sample assayed 25.6% lead, 18.2% antimony, 1.7% zinc, 44.6 g/t silver and 1.0 g/t gold (source uncertain). The veins were discovered during placer mining.
The 1992 drillholes failed to intersect significant mineralization.
