Work History
Staked as Pat cl 1-24 (81113) in May/62 by Cross Bow Mines Ltd and sold to Mayo Silver Mines Ltd, which explored with bulldozer trenching, mapping and geochemical sampling in 1963 and 1964.
In the spring of 1978 Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd optioned Queenstake Resources Ltd's claim holdings in the Dublin Gulch area. As part of this agreement, in Apr/78 Canada Tungsten restaked the occurrence within a large block of Jeff claims (1-112, YA17826). Information is sketchy but it appears the company trenched and sampled around the occurrence during the 1979 field season. This work was carried out as part of a larger regional exploration program. Canada Tungsten dropped its option in 1986 and returned all the claims including the Jeff claims to Queenstake Resources.
In 1988 Can Pro Development Ltd optioned the Dublin Gulch property (including this occurrence) from Queenstake. Can Pro carried out an excavator trenching program in the fall of 1989 however no work was carried out in the vicinity of this occurrence. Can Pro dropped its option at the end of 1989.
H-6000 Holdings optioned the Dublin Gulch property in early 1991 and subsequently optioned it in Sep/91 to Amax Gold Inc which carried out exploration programs in 1991and 1992, none of which were carried out on this occurrence. In late 1992, the property was returned to Ivanhoe Goldfields Ltd (a successor company of H-6000 Holdings) which carried out an exploration program in the fall of 1993. None of the work was carried out on this occurrence.
In Aug/94 First Dynasty Mines Ltd acquired Ivanhoe Goldfields Ltd and in Oct/94 Queenstake Resources Ltd transferred its interest in the property (i.e. Mar, R and D, DG, Jeff, Bob, and Smoky claims) to First Dynasty. In 1995, First Dynasty and in 1996 its wholly owned subsidiary, New Millennium Mining Ltd carried out a major drilling program to outline a core resource/reserve on the Eagle Zone (Minfile Occurrence #106D 025) located approximately 5 km to the southwest. The companies also carried out diamond drilling southwest of Potato Hills (Minfile Occurrence #106D 026 located 2.0 km to the southwest) to test for mineralization under the proposed heap leach pad area. During the 1990's no assessment work appears to have been carried out on this occurrence and assessment work requirements appear to have been met by work carried elsewhere on the Dublin Gulch property. The Jeff claims surrounding this occurrence lapsed on November 1st 2000.
First Dynasty changed its name to Sterlite Gold Ltd in Jul/2002. In Jan/2004 StrataGold Corporation surrounded the Dublin Gulch property including this occurrence, with Dub cl 1-1619 (YC11075). In Oct/2004 StrataGold Corporation entered into an agreement to acquire all of Sterlite's interest in Dublin Gulch. In addition StrataGold purchased Queenstake Resources surviving rights and interest in various claims. Queenstake retained a 1% royalty on ore processed from various claims and lease located on the Dublin Gulch property. Between buying existing claims and staking the Dub claims, StrataGold controls the entire Dublin Gulch area and its various deposits and mineralized zones. Throughout this period no work appears to have been carried out on this occurrence.
Capsule Geology
The area has not yet been remapped by the Yukon Geological Survey however C. Roots (1997) of the Geological Survey of Canada under contract with the Exploration and Geological Services Division (now part of the Yukon Geological Survey) remapped topographic map sheet 105M located directly to the south in the mid-1990's. In 2003 Gordey and Makepeace released a geological compilation of the Yukon which covered this area. In addition various company geologists have mapped the Dublin Gulch area in detail.
Geological work carried out by Roots, Gordey and Makepeace and various company geologists shows that the Dublin Gulch area is underlain by deformed Upper Proterozoic to Lower Cambrian clastic rocks of the Hyland Group that have been intruded by the Dublin Gulch Stock, a Late Cretaceous medium-grained granodiorite stock assigned to the Tombstone suite. The stock is cut by minor late dykes. Rare narrow intrusive breccia dykes have also been reported. Alteration, gold and tungsten mineralization is directly associated with these intrusions. A well-developed metamorphic halo occurs around the stock. Sedimentary rocks have been hornfelsed and the development of biotite+/- andalusite is common.
The occurrence is located approximately 500 m northeast of East Potato Hills. Canada Tungsten's report on the 1979 field season (Assessment Report #090614) contains a detailed geological compilation map which displays the approximate location of a series of old trenches most likely dug by Mayo Silver Mines in 1963. Based on Canada Tungsten's mapping, the occurrence area is underlain by phyllite, quartzite, schist and marble of the Hyland Group which have been intruded by a series of narrow granitic dykes.
A pamphlet released by Mayo Silver Mines in Apr/64 describes the North Potatoe Hill Gold Showing (or Ellis occurrence) as a 0.5 m wide quartz vein containing scattered arsenopyrite that follows a granitic dyke along a shear zone. The vein dips almost vertically and cuts a series of thinly bedded quartzite at a steep angle. Nine vein samples assayed from 0.34 to 48.7 g/t gold. The mineralization occurs in an erratic manner and no definite pattern of mineralization was observed.
Based on Canada Tungsten's map it appears Mayo Silver Mines carried out a significant trenching program around the area in an attempt to find additional mineralization but were unsuccessful. Each succeeding company appears to have given the area a cursory inspection however no further mineralization has been identified near this occurrence.
