Work History
Staked as Independence cl 1-8 (8098) in Jun/10 by J. Alverson and G. Huffman, who sank a 4.9 m shaft in 1912 and trenched until 1916. Restaked in Jun/49 as Peso cl(59282) by Alverson and C.D. Poll, who trenched with a bulldozer in 1950. The claims were optioned in 1951 and 1952 by A.W. Johnston and J.W. Powelson, and in 1960 by Tanar Gold Mines Ltd, which transferred the claims to a new company, Peso Silver Mines Ltd, in 1961. In late 1961 and 1962, Peso carried out 381 m of drifting and cross-cutting on the No. 1 Vein (northwest showing) and 874.8 m of drilling (16 holes), extensive trenching and 11.3 m of cross-cutting on the Rex vein. In late 1963, Charter Oil Company Ltd purchased a major interest in Peso and completed about 1 067 m of underground development and 1 067 m of underground drilling (35 holes) on the Rex vein in 1964.
Thirty-six claims on the north side of the Peso property were optioned early in 1972 to Alaskex Mining Corporation Ltd, which drilled 2 holes (127.4 m) later that year on the No. 1 Vein. Peso partially restaked the No. 1 Vein as MIC cl 1-8 (YA15331) in Jul/77, bulldozer trenched the Rex and Peso groups in Sep/77, added H cl 1-8 (YA30639) in Jun/78 and changed its name to Rex Silver Mines Ltd in 1979.
Partly restaked as Mole cl 1-18 (YA41643) in May-Oct/80 by a joint venture between Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation and Queenstake Resources Ltd. P. Howard staked Colleen cl 1-40 (YA62493) to the north of the old workings in Jun/81 and optioned them briefly to Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd, which performed preliminary mapping and sampling. In Oct/94 Queenstake Resources transferred its interest in the Mole claims to Ivanhoe Goldfields Ltd. A successor company to H6000 Holdings Ltd.
M.J. Moreau tied on Pierre cl 1-20 (YA77744) in Aug/85, explored with hand trenching in 1986 and bought the Peso and Rex claims at a Sheriff's sale in Aug/88 and added Pierre cl 13-84 (YB2095) in Mar and Oct/88 and Oct/89. Moreau restaked Mole cl 1-6, 13-14 (YB03787) and cl 15 -18 (YB03747), Peso cl 1-2, 11-12 YB03795), Rex cl 1-8 (YB03721) and Pierre cl 1-12 (YB03799), cl 27,29 and 30 (YB03729), cl 33 (YB03746) and cl 75, 77, 79, 81 (YB03732) in Aug/90. Aurum Geological Consultants Inc conducted a small sampling and evaluation program for Moreau in Jun/91.
H6000 Holdings Ltd surrounded the property with West cl 1-370 (YB18868) in Aug/91 and optioned them to Fairbanks Gold Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Amax Gold Inc. Amax carried out a soil geochemical survey on the Pierre, Mole and West claim groups in 1992, obtaining first right of refusal on the Mole and Pierre claims in return for filing two years' assessment work. H6000 subsequently changed its name to Ivanhoe Goldfields Ltd.
Ivanhoe staked W cl 1-19 (fractional - YB42202) between the West and Pierre groups in Jun/93, and soil sampled on the West and Sec claims and W fractional claims in Sep/93.
In Aug/94 First Dynasty Mines Ltd acquired Ivanhoe Goldfeilds Ltd. In Oct/94 First Dynasty restaked part of the West claims as the Rosie cl 1-15 (YB43714). In 1995, First Dynasty and in 1996 its wholly owned subsidiary, New Millennium Mining Ltd, carried out a major drilling program to outline a core resource/reserve on the Eagle Zone (Minfile Occurrence #106D 025). The company also carried out diamond drilling on Potato Hills (Minfile Occurrence #106D 026) to test for mineralization under the proposed heap leach pad area. In 1997, New Millennium carried out geochemical sampling for heavy minerals of Secret Creek and two of its tributaries which drain the West and W1 claims.
Capsule Geology
The area has not yet been remapped by the Yukon Geological Survey however C. Roots (1997) of the Geological Survey of Canada under contract with the Exploration and Geological Services Division (now part of the Yukon Geological Survey) remapped topographic map sheet 105M located directly to the south in the mid-1990's. In 2003 Gordey and Makepeace released a geological compilation of the Yukon which covered this area.
The occurrence consists of numerous quartz veins containing silver, lead and antimony that cut quartzite and schist of the Late Proterozoic-Early Cambrian Hyland Group. The veins are typically highly sheared, chloritic, narrow, many-branching vein-faults which trend 070° and dip 45 to 60°. Less than 20% of the drifted veins are mineralized.
Mineralized sections vary from 1.2 to 4.3 m wide and contain quartz, carbonates, pyrite, jamesonite, tetrahedrite, galena and sphalerite. Peso Silver Mines Ltd calculated a proved and probable resource for the Rex and No. 1 veins of 139 371 tonnes grading 716 g/t silver and 3.7% lead (Historical Calculation, not 43-101 complient) (by D.D Campbell - assessment report #062258 p.37). Ground conditions are very poor and mining conditions are more difficult than average for the Keno Hill district.
The 1977 trenching on the Rex group exposed the vein zone over a length of 83.8 m. The best chip sample returned 318.8 g/t silver and 0.07 g/t gold across 1.4 m. Another trench to the southwest exposed a faulted offset of the Rex Vein, a highly oxidized grab sample from which assayed 270.8 g/t silver and 0.17 g/t gold. Moreau's 1991 results confirmed the grade and location of the previously sampled high grade veins. Samples collected from the No. 3 vein (east) near a biotite granodiorite sill returned up to 1 720 ppb gold and low silver values. Amax obtained only a few weak gold soil anomalies, but rock chips from the No. 3 vein contained up to 0.51 g/t gold.
