Work History

Staked as Fun cl 1-25 (YA76037) in Nov/81 by Amax of Canada Ltd, following a regional stream and soil sampling program on the neighboring Fan claims (Minfile Occurrence #105O 036). The company carried out geological mapping and soil sampling in 1981 followed by further soil and silt sampling in 1982 and 83. In 1983 Amax transferred its interests in the area to Canamax Resources Inc.

In 2011, Newmont staked claims over the occurrence, collected bulk leachable extractive gold (BLEG) samples throughout the claim block and performed a ground gravity survey over most of the claim block. In 2012, a sampling program consisting of ridge and spur soils and rock grab samples was conducted.

Capsule Geology

The regional geology consists of Upper Proterozoic to Cambrian Hyland Group siliciclastic rocks overlain by Upper Cambrian to Ordovician shale, chert and siltstone of the Rabbitkettle Formation. The Rabbitkettle Formation is overlain by black shale, chert and limestone of the Ordovician to Lower Devonian Road River Group. The top of the sequence is capped by Lower Devonian to Mississippian Earn Group chert, shale and conglomerate. Most of the occurrence area is underlain by Earn group rocks.

The occurrence lies towards the south-central portion of a Middle to Upper Devonian graben proposed by G. Abbott. Mineralization within the graben occurs at several stratigraphic levels in Upper Devonian shale, conglomerate and minor volcanic rocks of the Lower Earn Group on the nearby Tom (Minfile Occurrence #105O 001) and Jason (Minfile Occurrence # 105O 019) occurrences.

Exploration carried out in 1981 in association with the neighboring Fan claims identified two 10-m-wide dark brown gossan zones cut by quartz carbonate veins in Road River carbonaceous shale. The least weathered rock contains disseminated pyrite. Two lines of soil sampling returned numerous isolated lead, zinc and silver anomalies. In 1982 Amax collected 218 soil and 4 stream sediment samples from the Fun claim block. The results indicate elongated areas anomalous in lead, zinc and silver parallel to the underlying sedimentary strata suggesting the possibility of stratabound sulphide mineralization. Follow-up soil sampling in 1983 outlined several moderate lead and silver anomalies but no obvious mineralization source. The company concluded the anomalies were related to the underlying Road River shales and siltstones.

Bulk leachable extractive gold (BLEG) sampling in the area in 2011 returned only slightly elevated levels for gold, but did return anomalous arsenic, antimony and mercury values. In addition, elevated zinc and silver values suggest the potential for sedimentary exhalative mineralization. Soil sampling in 2012 returned a cluster of anomalous gold values to the east of the occurrence with a high of 238 ppb Au.
