Work History
First staked as a single Lucknow claim (16412) in Jun/16 by A.R. Thomson and explored by hand pitting. Restaked as Dog cl 1-16 (83307) in May/66 by Early Bird Mines Ltd, which explored by trenching.
Purchased in Jun/72 by Silver Spring Mines Ltd and explored in a joint venture with Canadian Reserve Oil & Gas Ltd with geochem and geophysical surveys and trenching in 1972-73, addition of Zap cl 1-32 (Y68440) in Aug/72 and Moshe cl 1-8 (Y89155) in Aug/74, further trenching in 1974-75 and with at least 9 percussion holes (362.4 m) and extensive trenching in 1976, 1978 and 1981. A.H. Rogers added Michelle cl 1-3 (YA41884) to the north in Jul/80 and trenched in 1981. Silver Spring's interests were optioned by Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd in 1982.
Restaked as JSK cl 1-7 (YA83252) in Sep/86 by Julian Mining Corporation. Matt 1-4 cl (YA83678) and Star cl 1-4 (YA83682) were tied on to the east in Aug/87 by M. Fersovich and the Luke claims were restaked as Star cl 1-8 (YB2710) in Aug/88 by L. Halonen.
Capsule Geology
The occurrence is located approximately 1 km due east of Rambler Hill and 250 m north of the northern branch of the mining access road that branches off the Wind River Trail north of Cache Creek. L.H. Green of the Geological Survey of Canada mapped the area at 1:250 000 scale in 1961 as part of a helicopter-supported party known as "Operation Ogilvie". The area has not yet been remapped by the Yukon Geological Survey however C. Roots (1997) of the Geological Survey of Canada under contract with the Exploration and Geological Services Division (now part of the Yukon Geological Survey) remapped topographic map sheet 105M located directly to the south in the mid-1990's. In addition Gordey, Abbott and Roots (1990) remapped topographic map sheets 105M/16, 106D/01 and 106D/07East & 08 respectively in the late 1980's. In 2003 Gordey and Makepeace released a geological compilation of the Yukon which covered this area.
Extrapolating C. Roots geological mapping north, the occurrence area is underlain by Middle to Late Devonian Earn Group penetratively deformed rocks consisting of carbonaceous phyllite, siliceous carbonaceous metasiltstone, rare calcareous greywacke, metaconglomerate and a felsic metavolcanic member. This sequence is intruded by numerous Triassic aged tabular shaped metamorphosed mafic igneous intrusions. The occurrence, known as the Lucknow, or No. 2 Vein, has been traced on surface for more than 366 m. It strikes north, dips steeply east and cuts schist which is locally intruded by Triassic greenstone sills. Mineralization is best developed where the vein cuts greenstone and consists of heavily oxidized galena, sphalerite and pyrite in siderite gangue. The best publically available data suggests that the vein returned values up to 2.1 g/t gold, 2 235 g/t silver, 79.30% lead 1.14% zinc 0.53% copper (Assessment Report #090000 pg. 15). Previous versions of Yukon Minfile have reported higher grades but those values could not be verified.
Soil sampling over the vein clearly outlined mineralization however silver, lead and zinc values were generally much lower then those recorded over the silver veins located in the Keno Hill district. A test magnetic survey was run over the vein and produced flat results leading the company to abandon the survey.
The occurrence is now located within Class A Settlement Lands controlled by the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun.
