Work History
This record relates exclusively to the nephrite jade occurrences.
Staked as Lady Lee cl 1-6 (YB14908) in Aug/88 by J. Dodge who transferred them to Dodgex Ltd in Apr/89. Dodgex Ltd performed geochemical surveys and hand mined 317.5 kg of jade later that year and added Sleeper cl 1-14 (YB16459) and Lady Lee cl 7 (YB16458) to the north and west in Sep/89. Work in 1990 included prospecting, geochemistry, VLF-EM surveys and sampling with a Boyles JKS-10 sampler core drill. In Jul/91 Dodgex staked Sleeper cl 15-19 (YB34120).
In Sept/94 Expatriate Resources Ltd restaked the occurrence within Net cl 1-34 (YB56095). In Mar/95 Expatriate staked Net cl 35-58 (YB59119) and in Aug/95 added Net cl 59-72 (YB60984) to their claim holdings. During the 1995 field season Expatriate carried out a preliminary exploration program on the claims. In Oct/95 Expatriate staked Net cl 73-200 (YB63472) and in Mar/96 Net cl 201-214 (YB78696).
In the spring of 1996, Aerodat Inc under contract to Expatriate Resources Ltd, flew a regional, helicopter borne, electromagnetic and magnetic survey over the Net claims. The survey was focused on identifying the location of possible volcanogenic massive sulphide mineralization. Expatriate generally ignored the nephrite jade occurrence (this occurrence) and concentrated their exploration efforts on the adjoining stratabound sulphide horizon (Minfile Occurrence # 105G 121).
Capsule Geology
The area surrounding the occurrence was recently re-mapped by Murphy and Piercey (1999) of the Yukon Geology Program. They report that the area is underlain by a layered sequence of Devonian to Mississippian metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks belonging to the Yukon-Tanana Terrane (YTT). The YTT is a volcanic-plutonic, pericratonic arc assemblage that was strongly deformed and metamorphosed by late Triassic time. Volcanic hosted massive sulphide deposits exist at different stratigraphic positions within the YTT including the Fyre Lake deposit (Minfile Occurrence #105G 034) in Devonian to Lower Mississippian Fire Lake mafic meta-volcanic unit (DF), the Kudz Ze Kayah deposit (Minfile Occurrence #105G 117) in the Upper Devonian to Lower Mississippian Kudz Ze Kayah felsic meta-volcanic unit (DK), and the Wolverine deposit (Minfile Occurrence #105G 072) within the Early Mississippian Wolverine Succession.
The occurrence consists of three separate zones of nephrite jade located in and above the Money Creek thrust. The Money Creek thrust is a reverse fault that was active during the evolution of Yukon-Tanana volcanism and that was re-activated as a thrust fault during Late Paleozoic or Mesozoic shortening. The stratified rocks of the Money Creek thrust sheet were previously considered to be allochthonous and unrelated to footwall rocks. Recent work by Murphy, Piercey and others, have shown that the stratified rocks of the thrust sheet resemble rocks in the immediately underlying footwall, both in composition and succession. Furthermore, U-Pb geochronological constraints affirm that the successions are coeval.
The footwall is comprised of a stratified sequence comprised of biotite-muscovite schist (Unit Dq), marble (unit Dq), biotite-chlorite schist (unit Dm), and carbonaceous phyllite (unit DKcp). A Cretaceous granitic intrusion (unit Kg) intrudes the footwall sequence to the west. The thrust sheet is mainly comprised of massive basalt (unit DF) containing localized outcrops of quartz-porphyritic rhyolite (DFr). A serpentinized ultramafic intrusion (unit Dum) intrudes along the base of unit DF. Research suggests that the ultramafic is part of a sill that flowed from dykes lying along the trend of thickness changes in unit DF. The jade showings are found along quartz-carbonate-talc reaction zones in serpentinite, located in and above the Money Creek thrust. The jade occurs along serpentinite contacts and appears to be rolled up in an elongated amphibolite envelope.
Dodge hand mined 317.5 kg of jade material and recommended further evaluation of the showings to determine their commercial value. However it appears that no further work was carried out on the jade showings. Late in the 1989 field season, Dodge discovered a stratiform sulphide horizon in quartz-biotite-garnet schist, in the footwall sequence. Float samples returned up to 1.41% Cu, 1.65% Zn, 0.48% Pb and 18.9 g/t Ag. Follow-up work in 1990 led to the discovery of a 20 x 40 m zone of brecciated phyllonite containing a quartz-pyrite matrix which returned anomalous Au and As values. Although Dodge was one of the first individuals to recognize the area¿s VMS potential the claims were allowed to lapse.
Expatriate restaked the area during a claim staking rush, that resulted from Cominco Ltd¿s discovery of the Kudz Ze Kayah deposit (Minfile Occurrence #105G 117). The 1996 airborne geophysical survey outlined 3 second order conductors and 3 magnetic highs south of the occurrence. The magnetic highs were thought to represent underlying ultramafic rocks. Follow up exploration work was geared toward exploring the adjoining stratabound sulphide horizon (Minfile Occurrence 105G 121).
