Work History
Originally staked as the Victoria (4192) in February, 1900 by E. Sears and later surveyed and taken to patent in 1901. There is no record of assessment work ever having been filed on the Victoria. Other staking in the immediate vicinity in 1899-1900 included the Homestake (4470), Nellie (4497), Dinero and Orine to the north and east, Titan (4496) to the northwest, and Bonanza King (4516) and Rawhide (271) to the south and southeast.
The area around the Victoria was re-staked in 1908-1909 as the Fair Maid of Perth (1370), Little Joe (1280), Kenilworth (1363), Dreadnought, Mogul (1224), Udad (1229), Niobe Fr (4524), Cato (1303) and Judy Mack (1267). The Udad, Niobe Fr and Cato claims were surveyed and crown granted in 1908. These three claims were part of the Lone Star group and were developed with them. None of the other claims listed had assessment work filed other than the Little Joe, which adjoined the Victoria on the north/northeast. At least four drifts from 7 to 14 m long were driven and two shafts from 5 to 7 m deep were sunk between 1914 and 1926. Some of this work may have been directed toward placer deposits. Several shallow pits of about this vintage that are present on the Victoria claim may also represent placer workings.
Re-staked as part of the 185 Pup, etc. cl (78700) in 1960 by Klondike Lode Gold ML, who did bulldozer trenching and bulk soil sampling in the vicinity in 1960, and drilled three diamond drill holes (totalling 76 m) and four churn drill holes in 1961.
Re-staked in July, 1979 as DN 1-10 (YA32784) and DN 27-31 (YA47083) by Klondike Ken Ventures Inc, which bulldozer trenched in 1980 and optioned the property to Dawson Eldorado Gold EL in 1981. Dawson Eldorado did bulldozer trenching and geochemical sampling in 1981 and geological mapping in 1983-1984. In June, 1986, the property was optioned to Arbor Resources Inc., which explored with linecutting, magnetic, and VLF-EM surveys in 1986 and airborne magnetic and soil surveys, grid geochemistry, EM and IP surveys and bulldozer trenching in 1987. Arbor trenched in the 7 Pup area in 1990.
In August, 1992 Kennecott Canada Inc. optioned the Lone Star property (including the DN claims) from Arbor. In 1994, Kennecott carried out a reconnaissance assessment of the entire Lone Star property, including: digitizing of previous data, geological mapping, rock sampling, trenching and backpack soil augering. Two diamond drill holes (397.6 m) were drilled on the Buckland Shear zone located 5 km to the southwest (MINFILE occurrence 115O 077). The Victoria occurrence received a cursory inspection. In January, 1995 Kennecott terminated the option agreement. In January, 1996 Arbor changed its name to Klondike Gold Corp.
Klondike Gold Corp. optioned a 50% interest to Klondike Star Mineral Corp. (KSMC), which became a 50/50 joint venture in 2005. Klondike Star Mineral Corp held a 55% interest in the claims in 2005. KSMC performed property wide prospecting and rock sample geochemistry on the Lone Star property, including the Victoria occurrence area.
Regional & Property Geology
A shallow southwest-dipping contact between chlorite-quartz-muscovite schist (unit Psc) and underlying quartz-muscovite-chlorite schist (unit Psq) passes through the head of No. 7 Pup on Victoria Gulch. A small body of talc-carbonate-altered ultramafic rocks occurs along the contact, suggesting that it may be a thrust fault. A north-trending, plagioclase-phyric mafic dyke cuts the schists near the head of No. 7 Pup.
The coarse ragged character of placer gold in No. 7 Pup triggered the lode gold prospecting that led to the discovery of the Lone Star Mine in 1900 (MINFILE occurrence 115O 072). Much of the gold in the area contained so much quartz that it had to be mortared before sluicing. There are several unconfirmed reports of gold-bearing dyke rock on the Victoria claim. A placer miner interviewed by Aho in 1960 reported that a 15 m shaft was sunk on the claim and intersected a 'red-weathering porphyry dyke containing finely disseminated free gold and a little quartz'. Most old workings in the immediate vicinity of No. 7 Pup have been destroyed by subsequent placer mining.
Careful examination of float in the bed of the pup by J.K. Mortensen and R.J. Cathro failed to disclose any porphyry, although float blocks of discordant, pyrite and galena-bearing quartz veins to at least 20 cm thick are present. Bulk soil samples collected by G. Hilchey from both limits of upper No. 7 Pup contained gold colours and one of the four churn drill holes is reported to have intersected gold in bedrock.
Soil sampling by Dawson Eldorado Gold outlined scattered small areas of anomalous Au and As values. A whole-rock geochemical sample of altered serpentinite collected by J. A. Morin contained 2500 ppm As. Arbor's work shows that the Lone Star geophysical and geochemical anomalies extend northwest through this area. A specimen taken in 1990 from the pyritic zone assayed 68.9 g/t Au and mineralized float from the same area contained 65.5 g/t Au, 497.1 g/t Ag and 8.22% Pb.
Kennecott mapped and rock sampled the area surrounding the Victoria occurrence. No samples returned significant values.
In 2012, prospecting and rock geochemistry performed in the Victoria Gulch area by Klondike Star Mineral Corp. returned anomalous gold values up to 221.8 ppb in iron-stained, quartz-rich grab samples.
