Staked as Leo Lion cl 1-42 (Y43241) and Crown cl 1-16 (Y43329), cl 35-50 (Y43363), cl 69-84 (Y43397), cl 103-118 (Y43431) and cl 177-192 (Y43505) in Dec/69 by Atlas Explorations Ltd, which conducted grid soil sampling and mapping between late June and early Aug/70. In Jul/70 the company added Leo Lion cl 43-59 (Y53826) to the south end of the Leo Lion claim block in Jul/70. Partial funding for the program was provided by Dynastry Explorations Ltd which held an interest in Atlas explorations.
In Sep/2009 S. Ryan staked Lion cl 1-16 (YC83761) 3.75 km to the southeast. Later in the month, Ryan carried out prospecting, rock sampling and ridge and spur soil sampling programs. In Sep/2010 Ryan optioned the claims to Kaminak Gold Corp.
Staked within Coffee cl 411-610 (YC92601) in Sep/2009 by Kaminak Gold Corp. The claims make up part of the company’s larger Coffee property (Minfile Occurrences 115J 110 and 111 etc.) which at present time number in excess of 3 000 claims. In 2010 the company carried out ridge and spur soil sampling in and around this occurrence.
GEOLOGY
The area was reconnaissance mapped by D. Templeman-Kluit in 1974. Since that time various geologists have mapped near this area but no one has directly mapped the occurrence area in detail. Gordey and Makepeace (2003) released a geological compilation that covered this area. M. Colpron of the Yukon Geological Survey released a Tectonic Assemblage map which included this portion of the Yukon-Tanana Terrane in 2006. Colpron's stratigraphic units and age dates differ slightly from those used by Gordey and Makepeace because he is trying to work out terrane wide relationships.
The occurrence location appears to mark the approximate center point of the Leo Lion claim block. It is located approximately 8.75 km southwest of the Main Coffee (Minfile Occurrence #115J 110) occurrence and 5 km due south of the Coffee West (Minfile Occurrence #115J 111) occurrence, in an area which Kaminak Gold has not yet geologically mapped in detail. Based on geological descriptions reported by Atlas Explorations and work completed by Gordey and Makepeice, Colpron and Kaminak Gold geologists, the occurrence is underlain by Cretaceous Coffee Creek granite. The occurrence is located approximately 2 km north of its southern contact with Devonian to Mississippian metamorphic rocks. Based on work by Atlas Exploration the granite is cut by at leat one younger dacite dike which are known to occur in the region.
Atlas Explorations’ geological mapping program outlined numerous small sulphide veins located along major fault zones and disseminated sulphides residing in mafic rocks located at or near the intrusive contact. Grab samples collected from these zones returned up to 500.6 g/t silver and 2.3% lead. Soil sampling outlined a weak copper in soil anomaly (highest values 320 ppm copper) measuring approximately 1 km long and 500 m in the southeast corner of the Leo Lion claim group. Follow-up geological mapping traced the anomaly to minor disseminated sulphides located along the intrusive – metamorphic contact. All mineralization was considered too small and isolated to be considered economic.
The Dynasty Explorations assessment report contains a summary report of work completed on the Leo Lion and Crown claims and several other projects that they help finance. Most notably it contains a color geology map of the Leo Lion and Crown claims.
Ryan's Lion claims were staked to cover several old quartz galena showing previously identified by Atlas Explorations.
Spur and ridge soil sampling completed in 2010 by Kaminak Gold in and around the occurrence area, did not returned any significant anomalies.
