Work History
Staked as Mammoth cl (Yl4683) in Apr/68 by Bonnet Plume River Mines Ltd, which bulldozer trenched later in the year. Restaked as Sun cl (Y69035) in Apr/73 by Cypress Resources Ltd, which carried out mapping and hand trenching later in 1973-74. D. Waugh tied on the Ore cl (Y88612) to the east in May/74 and this group was explored with mapping and soil sampling by Phelps Dodge later in the year.
Restaked as Barb cl 1-6 (YA43413) in Nov/80 by Texaco Canada Resources Ltd, which added more claims in Oct/81 and performed mapping, geochem and geophysical surveys and hand trenching in 1982.
Restaked as Beta 1-6 cl (YB28503) in Jun/92 by D. Hajek. Hajek restaked the prospect as the Barb cl 1-18 (YB43385) in Sept/94 and Oct/94. In Feb/95 Hajek transferred the Barb claims to Westlake Ltd which carried out a trenching and prospecting program later in the summer. In Sep/96 J. Hajek staked BL cl 49-54 (YB65743) northeast of the Barb claims.
Capsule Geology
The region is underlain by a metamorphosed and altered sequence of Early Proterozoic Wernecke Supergroup clastic and carbonate rocks (Fairchild Lake Group, Quartet Group and Gillespie Lake Group, from oldest to youngest) that are intruded by Early to Middle Proterozoic mafic sills and dykes, and cut by Middle Proterozoic Wernecke Breccia.
Chalcopyrite and siderite occur in fine fractures cutting a calc-silicate alteration zone in a fault-bounded block of Fairchild Lake Group limy argillite within an area of approximately 1.6 km2. An 18 m chip sample from a bulldozer trench in the centre of the mineralized area assayed 0.15% Cu and 3.4 g/t Ag.
A weathered quartz-carbonate-sulphide vein cutting Gillespie Lake Group dolostone on the east edge of the mineralized area produced assays up to 340.5 g/t Au, 69 g/t Ag, 5.9% Cu, 21.2% Pb and 5.5% Zn. This vein trends northwest, is about one metre wide and is traceable for several metres along strike. Mineralization includes tetrahedrite, stibnite, galena, sphalerite and arsenopyrite. A few mafic dykes of the Early Proterozoic Bonnet Plume Intrusions are present.
About one km to the northeast near the summit of the northwest-trending ridge, cobaltite and chalcopyrite occur in narrow discontinuous veins cutting limy argillite peripheral to a Wernecke breccia body. A chip sample across 36 cm assayed 0.43% Cu, 3.85% Co and 0.14% Ni. Laznicka described three additional occurrences (25 to 27) in this area that consist of chalcopyrite in the matrix of the breccia, or in veinlets cutting nearby altered Quartet Group argillite.
