Work History
Staked as Fetch cl 1-20 (YA5963), Hasten cl 1-24 (YA61140) and Basin cl 1-24 (YA192) in Jul/76 by Welcome North Mines Ltd and optioned to Canadian Nickel Company Ltd (Inco), which explored with mapping, geochem sampling, minor hand trenching and mag, EM and resistivity surveys in 1977. Canadian Nickel added Fetch cl 21-25 (YA15167), Hasten cl 25-28 (YA15172), Hasten cl 29-34 (YA15325) and Basin cl 25-26 (YA21477) in June and Jul/77. In 1978 the company carried out additional EM and geochem surveys followed by 8 diamond drill holes (566 m), 3 of which were lost in overburden.
After the Inco option expired in 1980, the property was optioned by Cominco Ltd, which performed mapping and geochem sampling in 1982 and drilled one diamond drill hole (302 m) on Hasten claim 22 (Minfile Occurrence #105O 060) in 1983 before dropping the option.
Capsule Geology
*This occurrence is related to Minfile Occurrence #105O 060
The occurrence area covers a wide, overburden-covered valley bounded by shale, siltstone and clastic rocks of the Upper Devonian to Mississippian Earn Group. The occurrence is located approximately 2 km east of the Canol Road/Macmillan River on Basin claims 25 and 26 and consists of bedded barite and baritocalcite up to 4.6 m thick in shale. Assays returned up to 53.2% barium with negligible lead, zinc and silver. Canadian Nickel interpreted the unit to be equivalent to the spotted barite horizons of the Tom (Minfile Occurrence #105O 001) and Jason (Minfile Occurrence #105O 19) lying to the northeast and north. Massive barite-hosted lead, zinc and silver horizons lying below the spotted barite horizons on those properties do not outcrop on the Basin claim group.
Cominco’s 1983 drill hole was collared in the southwest corner of Hasten cl 22 on the west side of the Canol Road and Macmillan River. The hole tested a weak lead soil anomaly near the contact of the Ordovician to Devonian Road River Formation with the overlying Earn Group. The hole intersected mudstone, minor sandstone, grit and several magnetic dykes near the base of the Earn Group. Traces of sphalerite occur in a 1 m thick grit horizon and as interstitial infillings around mud flow clasts (Minfile Occurrence #105O 060).
