Work History
Located, but not staked, by Atlas Explorations Ltd for the Hess Project (Atlas Explorations Ltd, Quebec Cartier Mining Company, and Phillip Brothers (Canada) Ltd) in 1967. The joint venture carried out prospecting and geochemical sampling in 1968. Viceroy Exploration (Canada) Inc staked Sass cl 1-12 (YC01282) 1 km to the east in Aug/98 and carried out rock geochemical sampling.
In Mar/99, NovaGold Resources Inc acquired 100% of Viceroy's interest in the Sass claims and 21 other grassroots properties in the Yukon in exchange for 3.4 million common shares. Later in 1999, NovaGold carried out geological mapping, prospecting and rock geochemical sampling.
Capsule Geology
Minor chalcopyrite is associated with pyrrhotite in narrow quartz-filled shear zones cutting Proterozoic Hyland Group calcareous quartzite. East-west oriented porphyritic quartz dykes intrude Hyland Group phyllite, sandstone and siltstone further to the east, in an area with abundant limonitic staining and gossanous occurrences. The dykes are associated with a large mid-Cretaceous Tombstone Suite quartz-biotite monzonite stock that has intruded 3.5 km to the east of the occurrence.
Calc-silicate skarn, consisting of pods of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite and quartz-arsenopyrite vein breccias have been identified on the Sass claims. A 4.5 m chip sample of mineralized skarn, taken from the central part of former claim group returned values to 1.57 g/t Au, grab samples of other showings 500 m to the northwest and 1 km to the west returned 300 ppb Au and 1.29 g/t Au, respectively. Anomalous levels of bismuth and antimony are also associated with the showings. Quartz-arsenopyrite float located near the intrusive stock returned values to 2 000 ppb Au.
