Work History
Staked in Aug/54 as Rob cl 1-8 (69041) by Pelly River Mines Ltd (Pioneer Gold Mines Ltd, American Standard Mines Ltd, New York-Alaska Gold Dredging Corp and Northwest Ventures Ltd) and optioned to Brikon Exploration Ltd, a syndicate composed of Transcontinental Resources Ltd, Dome Mines Ltd, Timmins Corp, Chemical Research Corp, Sapphire Petroleum Ltd & Yellowknife Bear Mines Ltd, which conducted a ground magnetic survey in 1955.
Restaked by Northlake Mines Ltd (Augustus Mines Ltd, Copper Ridge Mines Ltd, Silver Standard Mines Ltd, Transcontinental Resources Ltd and North Pacific Mines Ltd) as Gee cl 1-530 (90172) in Jan/66. Later in the year, Northlake flew a mag and EM survey and conducted grid soil sampling and a Ronka EM survey.
Restaked as the 1st Base cl 1-44 (YB51866) by B. MacDonald in Aug/94 who mapped and soil sampled in 1995. In Feb/96 the claim block was included in a regional airborne geophysical survey flown over the area by Aerodat Inc. In May/96 MacDonald optioned the claims to Arcturus Resources Ltd which carried out detailed soil sampling, geological mapping and ground geophysical programs later in the year. The results of this program led the company to focus their efforts on the southeast corner of the claim block, (Minfile Occurrence #105G 142) where in 1997 they drilled 3 diamond drill holes (357 m).
In Dec/99 the company consolidated its capital and changed its name to Arcturus Ventures Inc.
Capsule Geology
The area surrounding the occurrence was recently re-mapped by Murphy and Piercey (1999) of the Yukon Geology Program. They report that the area is underlain by a layered sequence of Devonian to Mississippian metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks belonging to the Yukon-Tanana Terrane (YTT). The YTT is a volcanic-plutonic, pericratonic arc assemblage that was strongly deformed and metamorphosed by late Triassic time. Volcanic hosted massive sulphide deposits exist at different stratigraphic positions within the YTT including the Fyre Lake deposit (Minfile Occurrence #105G 034) in Devonian to early Mississippian Fire Lake mafic meta-volcanic unit (DMF), the Kudz Ze Kayah deposit (Minfile Occurrence #105G 117) in the
Mississippian Kudz Ze Kayah felsic meta-volcanic unit (MK), and the Wolverine deposit (Minfile Occurrence #105G 072) within the Carboniferous Wolverine Lake Succession.
The occurrence is underlain by biotite-muscovite-feldspar-quartz schist, micaceous quartzite (unit Dq) and marble (unit Dqc). Biotite-plagioclase-actinolite-chlorite schist (unit Dm) and feldspar-muscovite-quartz schist of probable volcanic protolith (unit Df) occur locally. These units are overlain by unit DMF, (Fire Lake mafic metavolcanic unit) comprised of massive to subtly layered biotite-plagioclase-actinolite-chlorite schist and lesser carbonaceous phyllite, quartzite and grey marble. Unit DMF is in turn overlain by unit MK, (Kudz Ze Kayah felsic metavolcanic unit), comprised of undifferentiated feldspar-muscovite-quartz schist, feldspar and less commonly quartz augen schist.
The metavolcanic sequence is intruded by granitic to monzonitic metaplutonic rocks (unit MGg) belonging to the Mississippian age Grass Lakes Plutonic Suite. Geological characteristics and stratigraphic relations suggests that the metaplutonic rocks are sills that flowed from dykes lying along the trend of thickness changes in the surrounding metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. North of the 1st Base claims the metaplutonic rocks are intruded along the base of unit DMF. East and south of the 1st Base claims the metaplutonic rocks occur in the lower part of unit Dq, below the calcareous member Dqc.
The history and location of the actual occurrence is murky at best. Previous versions of the Yukon Minfile reported multiple (3) occurrence locations. The western (6806461 N and 398928 E) and southern most (6805407 N and 399240 E) occurrences represented locations of chloritic schist (probably unit DMF), containing several pyritic gossans. Examination of the showings by Northlake Mines Ltd and others, uncovered only a minor amount of pyrite in quartz vein material and some specks of pyrrhotite in float. Quartz-carbonate veins and silicified layers of sericite schist hosting minor pyrrhotite, galena and sphalerite were also noted in the area.
The northernmost occurrence (and the occurrence displayed on Murphy and Piercey¿s map) consists of massive pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite float associated with mafic schist (unit DMF) near the northern contact with the metaplutonic rocks (unit MGg). Preliminary prospecting by the original claim holders also uncovered massive arsenopyrite in schist to the west which assayed trace Au and 68.6 g/t Ag. Later exploration work by Northlake failed to replicate the high silver assays.
MacDonald¿s soil sampling program outlined several anomalous areas of zinc and lead geochemistry in the southeast portion of the claim block. The airborne geophysical survey outlined several EM conductors and separate magnetic highs in the same general area of MacDonald¿s soil sampling program.
At the beginning of the 1996 field program, Arcturus Resources carried out a detailed soil sampling program over the entire 1st Base claim block. The results outlined 4 moderate strength Cu-Zn-Pb anomalies (labelled A-D) in the southeast portion of the claim block. The company focussed the rest of their program on following up these anomalies. In 1997 the company drilled 3 diamond drill holes to test several of the anomalies.
