Capsule Geology
At the headwaters of Johnson Creek, two seams of flat-lying lignite 3 m and 7 m thick are separated by a 2 m layer of white bentonite. They occur in an Oligocene sequence which is believed to correlate with the Kugmallit Formation of the Beaufort Sea (Norris, 1997). According to Cameron et al. (1986) the coal is very immature with vitrinite reflectances ranging from 0.15 to 0.20.
