Work History

Two old shafts are present at this point for which no history has been found. It is probably the gold-silver prospect mentioned by Ogilvie when he first visited the district in 1887 and, if so, is one of the first lode discoveries in Yukon. The earliest records found are for claim 795, recorded by Isabella M. Healy in Aug/1896, and Queen of the North cl (7257) in Sep/1905.
Restaked as Golden Gate cl (12944) in Dec/19 by J. Fournier. One shaft, at least 15 m deep, is present from this period.
Restaked as Teehee cl (YA32726) in Jun/79 by Teslin JV (Cassiar Asbestos Corp L, Cominco L & Exploram Mls L). The north side along the river was staked as Smokey cl (YA65555) in May/83 by T. Wylie.
Restaked as Ogil cl (YB4663) in Dec/87 by Homestake Ml Dev C, which performed mapping and geochem sampling in 1988 and tied on FMR cl (YB17256) to the north and east in Jun/88.

Capsule Geology

Mineralization on the shaft dump consists of a mixture of pyrite, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite in a quartz-carbonate gangue. A representative specimen assayed in 1979 returned 96.0 g/t Ag, 3.4 g/t Au, 5.7% Pb, 3.4% Zn and 0.3% Cu. Bedrock on the dump consists of graphite and chlorite schist.
The shaft was sunk through thick river gravels in a flat, swampy area and the nearest outcrop, situated on the bank of Fortymile River, is composed of south-dipping chlorite schist. A specimen assayed by Ogilvie in 1887 assayed 3123.4 g/t Ag and trace Au. He reported in 1895 that a large tonnage of gold ore was also present (Cone Hill?) and that two test shipments were made - 0.9 tonnes in 1895 and 4.5 tonnes in 1896.
