Work History
Staked as Bluebell, etc cl (4455) in Jul/1900 by H. Heffring, who drove a 76 m adit and inclined shaft in 1901, put in shallow trenches and shafts until 1904 and took three claims to lease in 1984.
The area immediately southeast was staked as PRED cl (Y81737) in Aug/73 by Sullivan and Rogers and optioned by a joint venture between Anglo American and Exploram, which performed a magnetic survey and mapping in 1974. The area to the southwest was staked as Dawson cl (YA79385) in Nov/83 by Lockwood Pet L and Tiburon Pet L, which explored with mapping, sampling and an airborne EM survey in 1984.
The workings were restaked as Hun cl (YA83834) in Jun/84 by a joint venture between United Keno Hill ML and Falconbridge L, which explored with a fence of percussion holes (472.4 m) in 1984 and rehabilitated, mapped and sampled the adit in 1987. An additional 788 m of percussion drilling was done in 1989.
Capsule Geology
The area is underlain by strongly sheared and deformed carbonaceous phyllite and phyllitic quartzite (Devonian Nasina Series), and imbricate thrust slices of altered ultramafic rocks. On the northeast side of the property, the phyllites are intruded by a large body (or intense dyke swarm) of quartz-feldspar porphyry (Early Eocene age). Immediately southwest of Hunker Creek, phyllite and ultramafic rocks are cut by scattered mafic dykes. The ultramafic rocks show intense silica-carbonate alteration and now consist largely of quartz, ferroan carbonate and chrome-mica. The alteration predated the latest shearing in the area.
The Ben Levy occurrence consists of a vein at least 5 m thick, which cuts carbonatized serpentinite on the northeast side of Hunker Creek. The vein appears to dip moderately to the northeast and consists of 1-5 mm bands of comb-textured iron carbonate with rare interbands of clear fine-grained quartz. Vuggy cavities lined with quartz crystals occur locally, and angular fragments of carbonatized serpentinite and carbonaceous schist occur within the vein.
Newspaper accounts of 1901-02 report that the adit and inclined shaft cut a quartz vein 14 m thick at three different levels to a maximum depth of 50 m below the surface of the hill. Vein material was reported to assay from 29.8 to 270.2 g/t Au and up to 54.9 g/t Ag.
United Keno Hill found no sulphides in either the vein or the wall rocks, and detected only trace amounts of gold.
