Work History

This area was extensively staked about 1904 and was intensely prospected with trenches and shallow shafts between 1905 and 1909. The two main properties were the Cousin, Jack, etc cl (6975), staked in Aug/04 by J. Lloyd and the Green Gulch group of Jane S. Orrell. Other active prospectors included M.R. Knorr, S. Thurber, and Agnes J. Kinsey. Lloyd sank 10 shafts averaging about 10 m deep and drove a 21 m x-cut prior to 1912, when MacLean visited the property. The Green Gulch group, to the northwest, was explored with 15 m shaft on the Tiger claim and an 8 m open-cut and 23 m cross cut on the Yellow Jacket cl (7784). A limited amount of bulldozer trenching has been carried out near the shafts on the Cousin Jack claim.
D. Morgan restaked the Green Gulch group as Doc cl 1-4 (YA49648) in Feb/80 and performed some stripping in 1992 and 1993. The other workings were restaked as Kloyd cl 1-16 (YA65791) in Jun/83 by Dawson Eldorado Gold Explorations Ltd, which performed mapping and geochem sampling later in the year, and as Kin cl 1-82 (YA89470) in Sep/87 by United Keno Hill Mines Ltd, which explored with mapping and geochem sampling in 1987-88 and trenching in 1989.
Morgan trenched in 1986-90 and Auger Mining tied on the Auger cl1-10 (YB5718) to the southeast in Jun/88. The Auger claims were transferred in Apr/89 to D. Smith, who performed geochem sampling later that year.
During 1996, Barramundi Gold Inc carried out a regional silt sampling, mapping, prospecting, and rock sampling program over part of the Klondike region, including this occurrence. In Mar/99 Barramundi completed 3 850 line km of detailed airborne magnetometer and VLF-EM surveying that covered a 16 x 24 km area centered about King Solomon Dome and included this occurrence.

Capsule Geology

Several mineralized quartz veins cut the hanging wall and footwall of a shallow southwest-dipping thrust fault that places chlorite and chlorite-quartz schist of the Permian Klondike Schist Assemblage (unit Psc) on top of a muscovite quartzite and minor muscovite-quartz schist (unit Psq). These rocks are part of the Yukon Tanana Terrane.
Mineralization found to date on the property consists of a single quartz vein that strikes about 120 and dips steeply to the northeast. The vein can be traced continuously in shafts and bulldozer trenches for at least 250 m. Over this interval, the vein varies in thickness from about 0.8 to 1.5 m. It consists mainly of white quartz, commonly with small vuggy cavities. Pyrite is present throughout the quartz as cubes and grain aggregates to 2 cm in diameter. The pyrite locally makes up as much as 2% of the vein material but is usually much less abundant. MacLean (1914) reported that traces of galena and free gold are also present. Angular fragments of wallrock are abundant within the vein and narrow zones of brecciated and sheared quartz are also locally present. Mortensen et al. obtained an average homogenization temperature of 310 C and salinity of about 4.3 wt-% NaCl equivalent from mesothermal veins of this type in the Klondike area.
Similar mineralization also occurs in material on the waste dump of a shallow shaft about 500 m south-southeast of the junction of the Caribou Creek road and ridge road. This shaft is well south of the projected trace of the vein described above and must be from a separate vein.
Gold-bearing quartz veins are also present in caved shafts and trenches on the Old Yellow Jacket and Tiger claims northwest of the Kloyd (presently included in the Doc group). This mineralization consists of quartz veins with scattered pyrite and traces of chalcopyrite, galena and free gold. One vein that is exposed on the Tiger claim strikes 136 degrees and dips steeply southwest. MacLean (1914) reported that of six samples from these veins, all but one contained gold, with the highest assay being 20.9 g/t Au and 6.9 g/t Ag from 0.5 m channel sample across a vein on the Yellow Jacket claim.
The mineralization on the Doc group is generally on strike with the main vein on the Kloyd property and is about 2 km from it. This suggests that the potential exists for a semi-continuous vein system at least 2.5 km in length and of unknown width.
On the Auger claims, a silicified andesite dyke and two clay-altered rhyolite dykes cut quartz-biotite-chlorite schist. Soil samples returned up to 80 ppb Au and 80 ppm As.
Barramundi¿s 1996 regional silt program returned several anomalous gold results in basins located south of Minfile Occurrence #115O 066. The best silt sample returned 20 ppb Au draining off towards the north-northwest in the Caribou Creek drainage basin.
