Work History
Staked as Jumbo, Good Faith, Clara, Baker and Huron claims in September, 1901 by W.J. Chance and W.R. Mitchell, who drove a 20.4 m adit and dug numerous shallow shafts and trenches in 1902-1908. J. Patterson staked Eureka cl (6316) in October, 1902 and hand trenched in 1903.
Re-staked as Klort cl 1-8 (YA65687) in June, 1983 by Dawson Eldorado Gold Explorations Ltd., which performed mapping and geochemical sampling later in the year.
In June, 1984, a joint venture group consisting of United Keno Hill Mines Ltd. and Falconbridge Ltd. staked Dom cl 1-207 (YA80272) over the entire length of Dominion Creek. The joint venture drilled a fence of nine percussion drill holes (551 m) 5 km to the northwest and a second fence of nine holes (609.6 m) 5 km to the southeast.
Re-staked within Sur cl 1-625 (YB81782) in June, 1996 by Barramundi Gold Ltd., which carried out a large regional geological mapping, rock and silt sampling program later in the year.
In June, 2000 KSL Exploration (Yukon) Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Klondike Source Ltd.; a public company registered in Australia, staked KSL cl 60-68 (YC20177) 3.5 km to the northeast and KSL cl 69-74 5 km to the northeast. The company collected two lines of soil samples across each claim block in September, 2000. All of the soil samples were analyzed using Mobile Metal Ion (MMI) geochemistry.
Capsule Geology
The property is mainly underlain by medium green chlorite-quartz-muscovite schist and chlorite-actinolite schist of the Permian Klondike Schist Assemblage (unit Psc). Carbonaceous schist occurs in dredge tailings in the bed of Dominion Creek at the eastern end of the property.
The property was examined by MacLean during the summer of 1912 (MacLean, 1914, p. 101-104). Most of the workings present at that time have since caved or been completely overgrown. MacLean described an occurrence of 'barrel leads' on the Good Faith mineral claim. The 'barrel leads' are very elongate bodies of foliaform quartz occurring in the hinges of mesoscopic second phase folds within chlorite schist. They consist mainly of coarse-grained, clear to milky quartz, with minor coarse-grained, medium brown weathering ferroan carbonate. A sample collected by MacLean from this locality contained no gold values.
Large masses of foliaform quartz of this type appear to be rather common on the property. Two other large areas of foliaform quartz in float and subcrop were located southwest of the 'barrel lead' locality. A discordant quartz vein 51 cm wide, striking 150 and dipping 20° to the northeast, was reported by MacLean (p. 102) from a trench on the left limit of Robinson Pup. Two samples taken across the vein approximately 10.7 m apart gave values of 0.69 g/t gold and trace gold, respectively. The higher grade sample showed a few fine colors of gold in the pan. A second vein occurs about 610 m farther to the SE. It is about 50 cm wide, strikes 060 and dips at 58° to the southeast (MacLean, p.103). A sample assayed by MacLean contained only trace amounts of gold.
On the Huron claim, MacLean reported a body of rusty quartz containing minor galena and sphalerite that was at least 11 m by 2 m in area. Two samples were assayed and contained only traces of gold, although one of them contained 5.5 g/t silver.
Mortensen et al. (1992) obtained an average homogenization temperature of 330° C and salinity of about 4.8 wt% NaCl equivalent for foliaform veins of this type, and noted that no evidence of alteration is visible in adjacent wallrocks.
One hole (hole DOM-7) collared at United Keno’s southeastern drill site returned 1,600 ppb gold from near the bedrock-gravel interface. The company theorized that the gold represented placer gold. None of the other drill holes from either location returned any anomalous values.
Silt sampling carried out by Barramundi Gold returned a weak single station arsenic, copper, lead and barium anomaly from a creek draining the northwest side of Portland Creek (approximately 1.5 km northwest of the occurrence). No samples were collected on the northeast side of Dominion Creek.
The KSL claims are underlain by fine-grained micaceous quartzite and quartz-feldspar-muscovite-biotite (chlorite) schist (unit Psq) that were derived mainly from siliciclastic protoliths. Large exposures of marble are common in the area. Soil sampling by KSL Exploration outlined weak to moderate gold response (up to 10 ppb gold) on both blocks claims, which the company attributed more to the contrast inherent in Mobile Metal Ion geochemistry than to the presence of any actual mineralization
