Work History

Discovered and staked in 1907 and extensively prospected and trenched in 1909. The history is obscure until May/44, when it was restaked as Myrtle Discovery, etc cl (4401) by G. Patten. Restaked in Jul/46 as Pan cl (56210) by A. Champagne, probably for the North Star Pros. Synd. Restaked by H. Perrin in Nov/53 as Canyon cl (69737), which were optioned to Hudson Bay M & S in Jan/54.

In 1953-54, Hudson Bay M & S staked and optioned 69 claims (Ann-66826 and Hoop 67964, etc) in Dec/53, which covered Hopkins Lake and the two small lakes immediately to the north. Following EM surveys, Hudson Bay drilled 6 holes (630.0 m) in 1954, of which 4 holes were drilled through the lake ice.
Restaked as Hope cl (75230) in Sep/60 by W.S. Reber; as Brian cl (77439) in Mar/62 by Kerr Addison ML; as Loon cl (85092) in Jun/63 by L. Nault and Al cl (Y10015) in Jul/67 by L. Saunders and partners.

The Duck and Crisp cl (Y24855) were staked in May/68 by A. Hume and J. Janisiw and transferred in 1969 to Giltana Copper Corp. L, which did some trenching in 1969-71, added the Bear cl (Y50046) in 1970 and Pay cl (Y66546) in 1971, and drilled two packsack holes (29.9 m) on the Pay group in 1972.
The adjoining A-Lake cl (Y24710) of M. Smith, also staked in May/68, were trenched in 1968 and 1969. Bill Kuhn staked the AX cl (Y75539) on the southwest side in Jun/73, and V. Scheck, etc added AX cl (Y92575) on the northwest side in Feb/75.

Restaked as Cop cl (YA50702) in Jun/80 by D. Lampert and transferred to Bolero ML, which performed mapping. T. Yardley tied on Side cl (YA60286) to the northeast in Jun/81.

Restaked as HOP cl (YB25531) in Mar & Jun/89 by Casau EL which conducted a magnetometer survey and mapping in 1990. In Aug/95 the remaining Hop and Acme claims were transferred to J.C. Stephen.

Capsule Geology

This occurrence is the original Giltana Lake occurrence described by the GSC. The nearby lake was later misidentified as Hopkins on maps. Skarns are found in limy sections of quartz-biotite schist near or along contacts with intrusive dykes and stocks of variable composition. The host unit is described in Johnson and Timmerman (1994a) as the Aishihik Metamorphic Suite.

Mineralization consists of magnetite and chalcopyrite with minor molybdenite, scheelite and precious metals. Individual mineralized skarns are lensoid and rarely exceed a meter in width. Some of the intrusive rocks contain disseminated molybdenite.

The conductors drilled by Hudson Bay were found to be caused by graphitic material. The best intersections in the 1972 drilling were 0.6% Cu, 0.01% W from 8.2 to 10.4 m in Hole 1, 0.5% Cu, and 0.01% W from 0 to 3.7 m in Hole 2.

Mineralization is also present in quartz veins, which cut the skarn. A channel sample of one quartz vein assayed 18.1% Cu, and 117 ppm Ag.

In 1990, Casau located north-trending epithermal breccia zones up to 10 m wide. Samples from the breccias returned values up to 560 ppb Au, 665 ppm Cu and 256 ppm As.
