Work History
Acquired as Coal Exploration Licence #82 in Nov/77 by Pan Ocean Oil Ltd, which carried out geological mapping and drilled 2 holes (281 m) in 1979 and 1 hole (331 m) in 1980. The area was relicensed as #139 in Nov/80; as #371 in Nov/83; and as CYM0016 by P. Wheelton in Dec/2001.
Capsule Geology
Coal seams are present in a Late Cretaceous sequence of conglomerate, sandstone and shale that forms the middle unit of the Bonnet Plume Formation. The coarse clastic rocks were laid down in wet alluvial fans and braided rivers while the associated silt, mud and coal were deposited in lacustrine, paludal and overbank flood plain environments and were preserved by rapid progradation of conglomeratic fluvial sequences.
The coal deposit occurs in a monocline that dips 5 to 20° northeast on a 180 m high hill capped by resistant conglomerate. An east-striking normal fault (north side down) separates the deposit into two blocks.
Drilling intersected five seams, the upper four of which correlate with seams forming the Illtyd deposit (Minfile Occurrence #106E 035). Only the upper two seams are included in reserve estimates. The upper seam is 8.0 m thick with a conglomerate hanging wall and shale grading to sandstone in the footwall. The lower (#2) seam is 5.0 m thick with a shaly conglomerate hanging wall and a shale footwall.
This coal has the following specifications: yield 72.3%, ash content 11.2%, volatiles 33.3%, fixed carbon 51.2%, moisture 4.2% and specific energy 24 888.2 kJ/kg. Indicated and inferred in-situ reserves are 60 830 000 and 43 800 000 tonnes, respectively, of high volatile bituminous C non-coking coal.
