Work History
Staked as Homestake group prior to 1921 by A. Martin and associates, who trenched and sampled.
Restaked as Homestake cl (59163) in Jan/49 by R.A. McCann and as Vicki cl (59276) in Jun/49 by R.S. MacDonald, who trenched in 1949 and transferred the claims to Whitemetal Yukon Mines Ltd, which trenched in 1951 and 1952. Restaked as Homestake & Vicki cl (62348) in Jan/54 by J. Lucas.
Restaked as Den cl 1-8 (Y56222) in Sep/71 by a joint venture between Canadian Reserve Oil & Gas Ltd and Silver Spring Mines Ltd, which added Paul cl 1-8 Y68614) in Aug/72 to the south and trenched in 1972. After Canadian Reserve dropped its interest, the property was optioned by Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd.
The occurrence now lies within Category A Lands of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun.
Capsule Geology
The occurrence lies immediately south of the southern headwaters of Cache Creek approximately 3 km southeast of Rambler Hill. L.H. Green of the Geological Survey of Canada mapped the area at 1:250 000 scale in 1961 as part of a helicopter-supported party known as "Operation Ogilvie". The area has not yet been remapped by the Yukon Geological Survey however C. Roots (1997) of the Geological Survey of Canada under contract with the Exploration and Geological Services Division (now part of the Yukon Geological Survey) remapped topographic map sheet 105M located directly to the south in the mid-1990's. In addition Gordey, Abbott and Roots (1990) remapped topographic map sheets 105M/16, 106D/01 and 106D/07East & 08 respectively in the late 1980's. In 2003 Gordey and Makepeace released a geological compilation of the Yukon which covered this area.
Extrapolating C. Roots geological mapping north, the occurrence straddles the boundary between Middle to Late Devonian Earn Group penetratively deformed metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks and Early Carboniferous Keno Hill Quarzite. This sequence is intruded by numerous Triassic aged tabular shaped metamorphosed mafic igneous intrusions.
Historical records indicate that the occurrence consists of at least two galena-bearing veins cuting Keno Hill Quartzite near a swarm of greenstone sills. The occurrence has been explored since the 1920's by various prospectors and exploration companies. The lack of assessment reports or other exploration records can be explained by the fact that a prospector would stake the occurrence then either perform physical work i.e. trenching (requiring no assessment report) or option the claims to a larger exploration company. The area surrounding the occurrence hosts numerous lead-silver +/- zinc veins and this occurrence was usually explored in conjunction with neighboring claims. It appears most exploration companies gave the occurrence a cursary look but spent the bulk of their time and money exploring higher grade neighoring occurrences.
