Capsule

Work History

Staked as A cl 1-4 (Y95025) and cl 5-16 (Y96477) by M. Cloutier in Aug/74. The claims were optioned to Dawson Range Mines Ltd which carried out a small reconnaissance program. In 1975 the claims were optioned to Thunder Creek Mines Ltd which reportedly carried out surface exploration, trenching and diamond drilling in 1975 and 76.

Capsule Geology

The occurrence is located on the east side of Braine Creek, a tributary of the Beaver River approximately 10 km west of Mount Williams in north-central Yukon. The area was regionally mapped by L. Green (1972) of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1961 as part of a helicopter-supported party known as Operation Ogilvie. Roots remapped topographic map sheets 106D/8 and 106D/7 (East half) to the east in 1990.

The area is underlain by massive dolostone assigned to the Lower Proterozoic Gillespie Lake Group which have been intruded by a large gabbro sill assigned by Gordey to the Middle Proterozoic Hart River Sills assemblage. The occurrence consists of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite mineralization which occurs in massive bands up to 13 cm-wide within a tremolite skarn zone measuring 1.7 m wide. The zone has developed in Gillespie Lake Group dolostone near the contact of a large Middle Proterozoic gabbro sill and can be traced in float for a length of 90 m before it is obscured by overburden.

A chip sample across a 1.7 m wide outcrop in a creek bed assayed 7.1% lead, 2.6% zinc, 54.9 g/t silver, 0.4% copper and 0.1 g/t gold, while a selected specimen of the best mineralization assayed 20.6% lead, 14.4% zinc, 154.3 g/t silver, 0.6% copper and 0.17 g/t gold. Examination of mineralized specimens during early 1976 was reported to have detected uranium.

The Canadian Mines Handbook 1976-77 reports that Thunder Creek carried out exploration work in 1975 and 76 but no assessment records can be located.
