Work History

Staked as Horn cl 1-9 (Y32885) in Aug/68 by a syndicate composed of Canadian Industrial Gas & Oil Ltd (manager: 33.3%), Canadian Southern Petroleum Ltd (33.3%), Sabre Petroleum Ltd (16.7%), Mesa Petroleum Company (10.7%), and Wainoco Oil & Chemicals Ltd (6%), which conducted mapping and geochemical sampling in 1969 and channel sampling in 1970.
Restaked as Old cl 1-14 (YB65397) by Eagle Plains Resources Ltd and Miner River Resources Ltd in Jun/96. The companies carried out reconnaissance exploration programs in 1996 and 1998.
Cyprus Canada Inc surrounded the Old claims with New cl 1-54 (YB81208) in Aug/97. The company did not carry out any work and the claims were allowed to lapse.

Capsule Geology

The area is located in the Selwyn Basin to the west of the Old Cabin Pluton. The area has not yet been re-mapped but units can be determined by extrapolating information from the adjoining 1:50,000 scale geology map released by Cecile (1998).
Cecile shows that the area is underlain by an Upper Proterozoic to Ordovician sequence of sedimentary and basic and volcaniclastic rocks. The sedimentary sequence consists of mainly shales, argillites, quartzites, cherts and conglomerates. The volcanic rocks consist of basic volcaniclastics, breccias, lapilli tuffs, flows, sills and dykes and occurs as a thick succession and tongues in the under and overlying sedimentary rocks. The mid-Cretaceous Old Cabin Pluton intrudes the sequence to the east and at least one small granitic plug intrudes the sequence in the vicinity of the occurrence. Although the contact between the Old Cabin Pluton and sedimentary\ volcanic rocks is quite sharp, hornfels and skarn zones are common in the intruded sequence. The hornfels contain dark, fine-grained magnetite which display a strong magnetic signature. Pyrrhotite and minor amounts of pyrite and chalcopyrite occur as small lenses in the volcanic rocks and with quartz in veinlets and shear zones.
The occurrence consists of a crushed quartz-carbonate vein system 4.6 m wide and about 106.7 m long that is exposed on a steep cliff face for a vertical distance of 36.6 m. The vein zone, which occurs only within the volcanic units and pinches to a tight fracture in the underlying chert, contains up to 40% pyrrhotite. Channel samples from the best portion of the vein assayed 0.5% Cu across 1.5 m and 0.2% Cu across 9 .1 m. A smaller zone occurs 9 m to the south, while on the opposite (south) side of a steep ridge, the projection of the vein is covered by limonitic talus.
Eagle Plains and Miner River Resources focussed their efforts on the extensive pyrrhotite hornfels and on the localized quartz-arsenopyrite veins cutting the intruded sequence. Although the pyrrhotite rich hornfels returned spot highs up to 4 646 ppm Cu, mineralization was sporadic and not economic. None of the mineralized hornfels returned anomalous Au values.
The quartz-arsenopyrite veins are generally restricted to the intruded sequence. The veins are continuous along strike but tend to be narrow ( up to 2-6 cm) in width. Although the veins returned assays of 2 - 3 g/t Au, vein densities were low and gold values within the veins were erratic. Based on these results the companies initially decided to allow the claims to lapse, but they returned to the claims in 1998 after Cyprus Canada staked around them.
The 1998 exploration program was focussed on following up a gold silt anomaly (805 ppb) reported in a Geological Survey of Canada regional stream sediment survey. The anomalous result came from a creek draining the main occurrence area. Prospecting and rock sampling failed to locate a source for the silt anomaly.
