Work History
The occurrence was investigated by Atlas Explorations Ltd in 1967-68 and was first staked in Oct/71 as PDM cl 1-144 (Y56385) by Phelps Dodge Corporation of Canada Ltd, which carried out geological mapping, soil sampling, magnetic surveying and hand trenching in 1972.
Restaked as Fat cl 1-24 (YA6003) in Jul/76 by R.G. Hilker, who hand trenched in 1977 and 1978 and as Uno cl 1-10 (YB49293) in Jun/94 by Archer, Cathro & Associates (1981) Ltd.
In 1996, Hemlo Gold Mines Inc carried out geochemical (rock, silt and soil) sampling over the occurrence before merging with Battle Mountain Gold Company in Jul/96. Battle Mountain subsequently released the data to Viceroy Exploration (Canada) Inc in 1997, prompting Viceroy to restake the occurrence as Mozart cl 1-144 (YC00897) in Apr/98 and carry out geological mapping and geochemical (rock, silt and soil) sampling later that year. In Jul/98, Viceroy staked Gato Negro cl 1-12 (YC01227) 13.5 km to the northwest based on favourable results of geochemical (rock, silt and soil) sampling carried out in the area. Late in Jul/98, Viceroy carried out additional geochemical sampling, geological mapping and prospecting of the Gato Negro claims.
In Mar/99, NovaGold Resources Inc acquired 100% of Viceroy's interest in 22 grassroots properties in the Yukon, including the Mozart and Gato Negro claims in exchange for 3.4 million common shares. In Aug/99, NovaGold staked Gato Negro cl 13-45 (YC01943) to surround the origin 12 claims staked by Viceroy.
Capsule Geology
A biotite-granite stock of the mid-Cretaceous Selwyn Suite has intruded Devonian to Mississippian Earn Group shale and Ordovician to Silurian Road River Group shale, chert and limestone that is in thrust fault contact with Proterozoic Hyland Group sediments. Traces of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite occur on unidirectional dry fractures within the stock, and pyrite and arsenopyrite occur in xenoliths and schlieren and along fractures cutting hornfelsed sedimentary rocks at the contact. Abundant gossanous areas with lesser arsenopyrite skarn and vein mineralization also occur near the stock.
Viceroy identified a 10 square km area of anomalous gold in silt values across the central and southwestern areas of the Mozart claims, with creeks flowing north from the central area returning peak values to 270 ppb Au. Grab sampling of limonitic calcareous sediments, 450 m north of the stock, returned values to 3.67 g/t Au.
The Gato Negro claims were staked to cover a widespread, weakly scoroditic baritic vein and vein breccia zone about 3 km upstream from a GSC silt sample that returned 35 ppb Au and greater than 95 percentile mercury values. Chert and chert breccia of the Road River Group are apparently underlain by a large buried intrusive. Stream sediment sampling on both flanks of an east-southeast trending ridge that hosts a circular breccia zone, 1 km northwest of the claims, returned anomalous values to 130 ppb Au, with up to 5.4 g/t Ag, 2 340 ppb Hg and 6 ppm Sb; four samples returned greater than 100 ppb Au.
