Work History
This occurrence is the site of the initial discovery in the district and was reportedly found by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company prospectors in 1946. Originally staked as Star cl (57435) in Apr/48 by G. Fairclough.
Restaked as Galena cl 1-8 (68937) by F. Hoey and Prop cl 1-6 (68953) to the east by R. Seraphim in Jul/54. Cyprus Exploration Corporation Ltd optioned the claims and carried out geological mapping and hand trenching in 1955.
Early fringe claims include the Rat and Iron cl (69288) staked to the west and south by Prospectors Airways Company Ltd on behalf of a syndicate including Noranda Mining Ltd and Kerr Addison Gold Mines Ltd in Sep/54. These claims were tested with hand trenching and one packsack drill hole (11m) in 1955. Conwest Exploration Company Ltd staked Track claims (73599) to the east in Jul/58.
Restaked as Rusty cl (73131) in Aug/57 by G. Fairclough, who added Vic claims (73765) in Sep/58. Fairclough optioned the claims to Ketzakey Silver Mines Ltd in 1959, which built a tote road to the property and reportedly shipped 11.79 tonnes of silver-lead ore to Trail, B.C. between 1960 to 1961. The property was subsequently optioned to Silver Key Mines Ltd in Sep/63, which carried out bulldozer trenching and drilled 9 holes (407 m) from 1964-66. In 1968 Silver Key, in a joint venture with Stump Mines Ltd, carried out geochemical sampling and drove a 58 m adit. Silver Key changed its name to Nordev Resources Ltd in Feb/72; optioned the Stump interest in Aug/74; conducted a small feasibility study in 1975; and then abandoned its interests in the area.
Restaked as Dub cl 1-8 and Gem cl 1-6 (Y94465) in Mar/76 by H. Regehr and associates, who transferred the claims to a new company, Iona Silver Mines Ltd, later in the year. Iona carried out bulldozer trenching in 1976 and 1977 and drilled 4 holes (268.8m) on Gem cl 4 and 3 holes (190.5m) on Dub cl 3 claims in 1978. In 1980, the adit was advanced 42.4 m.
Iona optioned its claims to Canamax Resources Inc in 1985 and changed its name to Aigner Holdings Ltd in 1987. Canamax added Saddle cl 1-6 (YA73647) to the southwest in Aug/85; drilled 8 holes (603.8 m) in 1986; carried out geological mapping, geochemical sampling, EM surveying, bulldozer trenching and drilled 13 holes (1 171 m) in 1987. Canamax returned the claims to Aigner Holdings in Dec/89.
Restaked as Star cl 1-8 (YB59270) by R. Berdahl in Mar/95. Berdahl staked D cl 1-2 (YB59266) to the north at the same time and staked Dad cl 1-13 (YB60965) and Dad cl 14-21 (YB62267) between the Star and D claims in July and Sep/95. During this period and in 1997 Berdahl prospected and sampled various known mineralized showings located on the claim block.
Capsule Geology
The Ketza River district is predominantly underlain by thick (400m or greater) successions of calcareous sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Lower Cambrian to Mississippian. The calcareous units are host to veins containing argentiferous galena and to gold rich mantos. The latter occur below an unconformity within Lower Cambrian limestone and the former occur throughout the calcareous members above the unconformity. The area has undergone at least five major deformational events. Fonseca (1998) attributes the gold rich manto, magnetite-gold skarns, veins and oxide gold occurrences and deposits to mineralizing fluids ascending D4 deformation event structures. The source of the mineralizing fluids is uncertain. The only igneous rocks exposed in the area are Mississippian age volcanic and intrusive rocks which have no spacial association with the ore bodies. Fonseca, (1998) suggests there is sufficient evidence, a mid-Cretaceous intrusion sits unexposed beneath the Ketza Uplift providing a probable heat source to drive the mineralizing fluids.
Trenching on the Hoey occurrence revealed six parallel bands of galena with pyrite and tetrahedrite from 13 to 36 cm wide across a 2.4 m width, in a strong vein fault up to 10 m wide. The vein fault strikes north and dips 73¿ west and cuts massive quartzite of Middle Silurian to Middle Devonian age. A chip sample collected in 1963 assayed 541.7 g/t Ag & 26.1% Pb across 2.4 m. Later trenching traced the zone along strike for over 274 m. The best continuous surface assay is 30 m grading 579.4 g/t Ag, 29.4% Pb and trace gold over a width of 2.6 m. The best assay from 3 drill holes below the zone is 3.3 m grading 11.0 g/t Au. No silver-lead mineralization was encountered in the adit, which is less than 30 m below the mineralized outcrop, but a 9 m length of vein in the drift assayed 23.3 g/t Au over a 1.5 m width.
Berdahl (1995) reported sampling an oxide zone located ¿near the Hoey adit¿ which returned 6.34 gpt Au from a grab sample. Berdahl describes the zone as being located at a quartzite-shale contact.
At least five weaker showings (F1, F3, F7, etc) occur within 610 m to the north and east. They contain similar mineralization with occasional traces of chalcopyrite, with galena erratically distributed and low in silver content. Canamax discovered oxidized mantos on the Gem 6 and Saddle 4 claims in 1986. One zone was traced for a length of 46 m on surface and averaged 3.4 g/t Au and 48.0 g/t Ag across 4.0 m in trench sampling. One drill hole returned an intersection of 6.9 g/t Au across 13.3 m.
Berdahl sampled existing trenches and material from numerous waste dumps in the area. Samples were analysed for gold plus 30 elements by ICP. Many of the areas previously mined for highgrade silver returned gold values of a gram per tonne or better. Anomalous thallium values (up to 114 ppm) occur with zinc sampled at the Hoey occurrence and also with some samples from the Saddle zone.
