Work History

First discovered during mapping by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1945 and originally staked as Bill cl 1-6 (Y3593) in Mar/66 by J. Mullen.
The south side was restaked as Grand cl 1-48 (YA81848) in May/84 by Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Company Ltd, which carried out geological mapping and geochemical sampling in 1985 and magnetometer and VLF-EM surveying and geochemical soil sampling in 1986.
In 1987, the Grand claims were optioned to a joint venture between Noranda Exploration Company Ltd, Brenda Mines Ltd and Golden Nevada Resources Inc, which carried out geochemical sampling and airborne geophysical surveying later in the year. Prime Capital Corporation tied on various non-sequentially numbered Ran claims (YB9169) to the northeast and southwest in Nov/87 and optioned them to Argo Development Corporation, which carried out geological mapping, soil sampling and airborne geophysical and ground magnetic surveys in 1988. Golden Nevada Resources Inc changed its name to Goldnev Resources Inc in Jun/89 and excavated 4 backhoe trenches and 1 pit on the Grand cl 1 and carried out geochemical rock and soil sampling of the workings in 1991 before dropping its option later in the year.
The Ran and Grand claims were transferred to A. Carlos in Feb/92. A. Carlos performed linecutting (12 km) and trenching on the Ran claims from May to Jun/93, and diamond drilled on the Grand claims in Sep/93. In Oct/94 the Grand and Ran claims were transferred to YGC Resources Ltd. In 1995 YGC drilled two holes (180.5 m), one hole on the Grand cl 122 near Danger Creek and the other on the Grand cl 5 near the Lapie River.

Capsule Geology

Coal occurs in a partially exposed 400 m thick section of Paleocene or Eocene sediments along the Lapie River. The section, which is in fault contact with older rocks, is an erosional remnant in the floor of the Tintina Trench. The section dips southwest at 25¿ to 35¿ and is composed of sandstone, shale and conglomerate with a gross trend of upward coarsening grain size that is interpreted as a lake deposit. Two thin coal seams, 0.3 and 0.1 m thick, have been noted. Coal rank is high volatile bituminous A, which is markedly higher than elsewhere in the Tintina Trench.
The 1984 and 1987 staking was directed toward possible strike extensions of Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks associated with the Grew Creek deposit (Minfile Occurrence #105K 009). Trenching in 1991 to test for possible clay alteration associated with gold mineralization exposed moderately to strongly fractured quartz-feldspar porphyry and crystal-lithic tuff, but no clay altered zones or mineralization were discovered. Most of the Ran claims are underlain by Palaeocene glacial till which covers Palaeozoic limestone and phyllite.
Samples from the 1995 diamond drilling, testing VLF-EM geophysical targets, did not yield any significant gold values. The drill hole near the Lapie river intersected a clay altered breccia zone hosted by a grey quartz eye rhyolite porphyry (Stroshein, 1995). The hole near Danger Creek intersected a carbonaceous, clay rich contact zone between grey quartz eye rhyolite porphyry and poorly consolidated fluvial sedimentary rocks. Stroshein (1995) noted that the contact zone appears to be an altered shear zone similar to the E-W fault contact between the felsic pyroclastic and the fluvial sedimentary rocks at the Grew Creek deposit (Minfile Occurrence #105K 009).
