Work History
Reportedly found by R. Lavalee about 1945 and first staked by Lavalee and his associates as Cub cl 1-36 (Y36122) in Aug/69. The property was sampled by Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd later that year, and was optioned in 1970 by Argo Petroleum Ltd, which performed mapping and a magnetic survey. In 1972 Asarco Exploration Company of Canada Ltd optioned the 8 remaining Cub claims and surrounded them in Aug/72 with Bear cl 1-28 (Y66877). The company carried out minor hand trenching and a ground magnetometer survey later in the year.
Restaked by G. Asuchak and C. Cote in Aug/74 as Polar cl 1-4 (Y80180), and optioned to M. Nichiporuk, who drilled 2 holes (39.0 m) later in the year. In Aug/83 H. Rail staked Cup cl 9-16 (YA78292) to the north overtop expired Bear claims.
Restaked as Red cl 1-6 (YA85591) in Oct/84 by K. MacPhee.
Restaked as HF cl 1-16 (YC18767) in May 2000 by G. McLeod who carried out a small rock and silt sampling program in Jun/2002.
Capsule Geology
The area is located approximately 16 km northeast of Marsh Lake and 2 km west of Lue Lake. The occurrence consists of three outcrops hosting low-grade short-fiber chrysotile in ultramafic rocks assigned to the Mississippian to Permian Cache Creek Group, part of the Cache Creek Terrane. The ultramafic rocks are described as fractured, serpentinized peridotite containing minor amounts of chromite and magnetite +/- nickel. The ultramafic rocks are in contact to the northeast with Upper Triassic sediments assigned to the Lewes River Group. To the southwest the ultramafic rocks are in contact with Lower to Middle Jurassic sediments assigned to the Laberge Group. A small granitic intrusion outcrops north of the asbestos showings.
The three showings occupy an area measuring about 300 by 180 m. The asbestos is hosted by veinlets that range in width from a human hair to 2.5 cm with the majority averaging about 0.6 cm.
A ground magnetometer survey conducted by Argo Petroleum over the ultramafics outlined a series of magnetic highs associated with the exposed asbestos showings. Several stream sediment samples collected by the Geological Survey of Canada in the early 1980¿s up stream from Lue Lake returned anomalous values for nickel.
McLeod staked the ultramafics to check for the presence of platinum group elements (PGE). McLeod verified the location of the original trenches and the two drill holes. Twenty-six grab samples collected by McLeod from the peridotite returned values of 1 371 to 2 035 ppm nickel, 50 to 105 ppm cobalt and 458 to 1 714 ppm chromium. Although anomalous for most rocks these values are slightly less than the average values reported for alpine peridotite. A pan concentrate sample collected from a stream draining the area returned no platinum and only background values for most other elements.
