Work History
Staked in Jun/06 as Gold Reef (8623) by D. Hodnett and J. Stagar, resulting in the staking of 700 claims within 90 days. Adjoining Custer, Alice M and Ramon claims were staked to the south. By 1909, two adits had been driven 15 m and 30.5 m and several shallow shafts had been sunk. One of the adits was still open in 1972. Restaked as O'Henry cl (18985) and Nader cl (19000) in 1926 by H.A. Butler; as Gold Reef cl in 1936 by C.J. Irvine; as Bill and Jack cl (72398) in Apr/56 by G. Smith and W. Ady; as Star cl (85873) in Jan/64 by P. Poggenburg; as Gold cl (92133) in Jun/65 by Yukon Antimony Company Ltd; and as CC cl (Y33839) in Apr/69 by Mineral Hill Mines Ltd. Yukon Antimony built a bulldozer trail to the showing in 1965.
Restaked as Hill cl 1-8 (Y91762) in Dec/74 by T. Jones and J. Higgins, who carried out geological mapping and geochemical sampling in 1976 and trenching in 1982. G. Reynolds tied on Albatros cl (YA61621) and Bluebird cl (YA61622) to the east in Jul/81. Tally-Ho Exploration Ltd purchased the Hill group in 1983 and staked CR cl 1-200 (YA78392) and SR cl 1-7 (YA78747) in Sep/83, and carried out geological mapping, geochemical sampling and trenching on behalf of Wheaton River Joint Venture (Tally-Ho, Euro-Petroleum Corporation and Wesclift Resources Ltd). Wesclift's interest was transferred to Permian Resources Ltd in 1985, when the joint venture carried out additional geological mapping, geochemical sampling, VLF-EM surveying, bulldozer trenching and drilled several percussion holes.
T. McCrory tied on Neil cl 1-12 (YA82973) to the west in Sep/84; G. Reynolds staked Mr cl 1-16 (YA85563) to the south in Sep/84; Ranger Pacific Minerals Ltd staked Jill cl 1- 18 (YB08065) to the south in Sep/87; A. Jobin tied on Lien cl 1-4 (YB12823) to the west in Feb/88; and L. Bratvold tied on Cry cl 1-2 (YB20348) to the north in Jul/88. The Neil claims were transferred in 1988 to Ranger Pacific, which carried out geochemical soil sampling and geological mapping of the Neil and Lien claims later that year and prospected on the Jill claims in 1989.
In 1990 Academy Resources Ltd acquired a block of claims through staking or option which included the Gold Reef occurrence. Academy drilled 3 holes (128.93 m) on Mr cl 14 in Dec/90.
In Jun/94 Academy Resources optioned the Tony, Lil, Neil and Laid claims to Avance International Inc. Avance carried out geochemical soil sampling on the north (Lil cl 15 and 16) and south (Lil cl 1 and 3) grids later in the year.
In May/94 R. Quesnel staked Hodett cl 1-20 (YB46782) 1.5 km northwest of Hill claims. The following month E. Bergvinson staked Hodnett cl 21-28 (YB46943). The Hodett claims were restaked as Ho cl 1-30 (YB95941) by Omni Resources Ltd in Jul/96 and immediatlely carried out prospecting in the vicinity of a drill hole (146.91 m) that was reportedly collared near the summit of Mt. Hodnett in 1990, approxiamtely 3 km northwest of the occurrence location marker (Ho cl 22). Omni staked JTR cl 2-3 (YC08299) on the east side of the Ho claims in Sep/97.
The original occurrence was restaked as Sam cl 1-6 (YC08251) by J. Byrne in Sept/97. Later in the month Byrne staked Dam cl 1-18 (YC08301) on the west side of the Sam claims.
In Nov/2000 Omni amalgamated with Trumpeter Yukon Gold Inc to form Tagish Lake Gold Corporation, which carried out prospecting and geochemical sampling of the Ho claims in 2002.
Capsule Geology
The vein on the Gold Reef claim is 1.2 to 1.5 m wide and locally swells to 4.6 m of solid quartz, concordant with foliation in greenstone and schist of the Triassic Lewes River Group. Small lenses of arsenopyrite, galena, argentite, chalcopyrite and pyrite were found and one small pocket contained coarse free gold, sylvanite and hessite.
On the claims south of the Gold Reef, a quartz vein up to 1.8 m wide was found containing tetrahedrite. Exploration by Wheaton River Joint Venture located a 7 m wide zone containing narrow quartz-galena-tetrahedrite veins cutting carbonate-rich schist. Chip sampling across 5 m returned 377 g/t Ag with weakly to moderately anomalous gold, lead and copper values. Adjacent trenches exposed brecciated limestone containing minor tetrahedrite and galena. Specimens of similar mineralization taken in 1984 assayed up to 23 g/t Au and 1 330 g/t Ag but the trench samples returned low values.
Soil sampling on the Neil and Lien claims in 1989 returned values up to 600 ppb Au.
Avance International collected 410 soil samples. A number of spot highs were obtained (> 40 ppb Au) but these were interpreted to indicate narrow mineralized quartz zones which have little or no continuity. A two phase percussion drilling program was recommended to test the mineralized float train previously discovered on Gold Hill.
Tagish Lake (2003) reports that Omni¿s 1990 drillhole collared near the summit of Mt. Hodnett intersected 10.67 m of 2.6% Zn and 0.42% Cu from the lower 45.72 m of the hole. Later sampling reportedly carried out on this core returned 5 non-continuous 1.52 m sample that returned 6.17, 5.49, 4.48, 3.46 and 3.46 g/t Au from the upper part of the hole. Grab samples collected in 2002 during confirmation rock sampling in an area approximately 500 m south-southeast of the drill site (TK zone) returned anomalous silver and base metal values, including up to 376.46 g/t Ag, 7.2% Zn, 1.12% Pb, 1.89% Cu, 1 179 ppm Cd and 874 ppm Bi. Soil sampling carried out to the north at this time did not return any significant values.
