Work History
Originally staked in 1893 by F. Corwin and T. Rickman, who carried out prospecting and hand trenching before returning to Juneau with `rich ore samples¿. Both men are reported to have died suddenly soon afterwards without having disclosed the exact location of the claims. In 1898, W.F. Schnabel and others rediscovered one of their old camps but were unable to locate the claims or the source of the samples.
The old workings were restaked as Empire cl in Aug/06 by H.E. Porter and J.H. Conrad, who staked the adjoining Porter and Excelsior cl at the same time. All three claims were taken to lease in 1911 and by 1912, approximately 335 m of drifting was carried out from an adit on the Porter claim.
By 1940, the portal of the main adit was buried by talus. Restaked as Empire claims about 1941 by J. Cox and W. McAlister, who cleaned out the old workings; as Grizzly cl 1-4, Dorothy cl 1-8 and Frankie cl 1-8 (73561) by Prospectors Airways Company Ltd in Jun/58; and as Lum cl 1-22 and Lin cl 1-8 (90251) in Jun/64 by Yukon Antimony Corporation Ltd, which carried out geochemical sampling and bulldozer trenching in 1965 and 1966. The property was optioned to National Lead Company Ltd from June to Sep/70. In Feb/71, Yukon Antimony was merged into International Mariner Resources Ltd.
Restaked as Diane cl 1-8 (YA7918) in Aug/76 by Con-Am Resources Ltd, which carried out EM surveying in 1976 and drilled ten holes (671.5 m) in 1977. Con-Am staked Ant cl 1-4 (YA18570) to the northwest in Jun/77. B. Wilson acquired the three leased claims in 1983, tied on Gor cl 1 (YA78391) in Sep/83 and carried out geological mapping and sampling of the underground workings in 1984.
Berglynn Resources Ltd surrounded the occurrence with Pop cl 15-104 (YA81468) in Mar/84, carried out geological mapping, geochemical soil sampling and staked Pop cl 101 fr-116 fr (YA93378) in 1984 and 1985 and carried out road construction in 1986. During this period Skukum Venture Inc staked Sten cl 1-17 and 19-45 (YA92922) contiguously to the west and carried out prospecting, geological mapping and contour geochemical soil sampling of their claims the following year.
Skukum Ventures and Berglynn formed a joint venture in 1987, to consolidate their holding in the area, and carried out geophysical surveying and drilled two holes (483.7 m) later that year. Skukum Ventures was renamed Skukum Gold Inc in Mar/88. B. Wilson carried out hand trenching on the Gor claim in 1988, before transferring the Gor and leased claims to Skukum Gold in Mar/89.
Berglynn changed its name to Arkona Resources Inc in Mar/92 and in 1994 Arkona formed a new joint venture with No. 276 Taurus Ventures Ltd, a private B.C. company, thereby allowing it to increase its interest in the property and contiguious claims.
Omni Resources Inc optioned the property in 1995 and drilled two holes (510 m) in Sep/96. Omni and Arkona carried out detailed geological mapping, contour soil sampling and prospecting in 1998. By 1999 Omni had earned a 60% interest in the property and purchased Taurus Ventures 10% interest, subsequent to Arkona transferring 100% ownership of the property to Omni on July 23/99.
In Nov/2000 Omni amalgamated with Trumpeter Yukon Gold Inc to form Tagish Lake Gold Corporation.
Capsule Geology
Numerous narrow quartz-stibnite veinlets occur mostly within altered granitic rocks of the mid-Cretaceous Carbon Hill Plug on the south and west facing slopes above Antimony Creek. Individual showings are sporadic and consist of pockets of sulphides in quartz-biotite gangue. Both antimony and silver-rich assemblages occur. Stibnite and sphalerite are the most abundant minerals but lesser amounts of galena, tetrahedrite, zinkerite, chalcostibite, plagionite and covellite are also present.
Historic workings, as described in Geological Survey of Canada Memoirs 31 and 234, indicate two areas where exploration activity has been focused in the past; the Porter (Fleming) showing or adit for which this occurrence is named and the Empire showing (veins), approximately 1 km north-northwest of this location, which is apparently the site of the original discovery.
Vein mineralization in the vicinity of the Porter showing is found primarily in three veins. One vein which is exposed in the underground workings and two others which outcrop on surface. The largest of the surface veins is located approximately 100 m east of the adit and has been traced for about 40 m in a series of small outcrops. At its western end where it is exposed in a small pit, it varies in width from 25 to 90 cm and consists mainly of quartz, stibnite and sphalerite with minor malachite. A smaller vein is exposed in a single outcrop, 30 m directly uphill from the adit, where it is 10 to 20 cm wide and is exposed over a length of 7 m. The third vein is exposed underground in the adit and consists of two segement each about 3 m in length. Sampling in 1984 returned values of 2 718 g/t Ag, 3.8 g/t Au and 9.1% Sb across 35 cm from the western end of the largest surface vein, 1 678 g/t Ag, 3.7 g/t Au and 8.0% Sb across 15 cm from the underground vein and 2 991 g/t Ag, 0.7 g/t Au and 0.45% Sb across 15 cm from the smaller surface vein.
At the Empire showing at least two veins containing stibnite cut rusty weathering, blue-grey andesite porphyry flows and breccias of Upper Jurassic age. Extensive surface prospecting and trenching has traced the larger vein for approximately 75 m, while the other smaller vein was exposed in only one trench. A chip sample across 48 cm of the footwall portion of the larger vein returned 16.68% Sb.
The 1985 and later work was directed toward the gold potential of the occurrence and adjoining claims. A few widely scattered soil values up to 1 500 ppb Au were obtained, but assays from rocks and drill core were generally low.
