Work History
Staked as Dows cl 1-16 (YB7687) in August 1987 by E. Curley and optioned to Noranda Exploration Company Ltd., which explored with geochemical, magnetic and IP surveys, trenching and 5 diamond drill holes (388 m) later in the year. In 1988, Noranda staked Dows cl 17-72 (YB12755) and cl 73-118 (YB13055) and performed geochemical magnetic and IP surveys. In 1989, Noranda drilled 1 diamond drill hole (198.7 m). The following year, Noranda relinquished its option. In 1992, Curley funded a trenching and soil sampling program with Noranda.
In early 1995, Curley optioned the property to Atna Resources Ltd. which carried out a trenching program later in the summer. During the trenching program BYG Resources, owners of the nearby Mount Nansen Mine, mapped and sampled the trenches.
In 2006, R. Hulstein re-staked some of the expired Dows claims as the Desk claims 1-6 and conducted a radiometric survey in 2007. Strategic Metals Corp. staked the Sked claims 1-30 in 2009 and 31-36 in 2010 and purchased the Desk claims in 2010. Wolverine Minerals Corp. optioned the Sked and Desk claims in 2010 and a small soil sampling program was conducted. A follow-up soil sampling and trenching program was conducted in 2011.
In 2013, the Sked and Desk claims reverted to Strategic Metals. Rockhaven Resources acquired the Desk and Sked claims via a property-swap transaction with Strategic in 2015.
In 2016, Rockhaven carried out soil and rock geochemistry at the Sked occurrence. A ground IP and magnetic geophysical survey was carried out over the claims including the Dows occurrence by Rockhaven in 2017.
Regional & Property Geology
The occurrence is located in the Dawson Range within Yukon-Tanana Terrane (YTT). The rocks of the YTT in this region consist of Early Mississipian metamorphic rocks separated into meta-sedimentary and meta-igneous suites (Stroshein, 1998). The meta-sedimentary suite consists of micaceous quartz-feldspar gneiss, schist and quartzite. The meta-igneous package is comprised of biotite-hornblende feldspar gneiss and coarse-grained granodiorite orthogneiss with lesser amphibolite.
These basement rocks are cut by numerous plutonic and volcanic events from the Cretaceous, including:
1. Mid-Cretaceous Mount Nansen Suite andesite, felsic lapilli tuffs, basaltic to latite volcanic rocks; and quartz feldspar porphyry, dacite, latite, and quartz monzonite porphyritic hypabyssal rocks,
2. Mid-Cretaceous Whitehorse granodiorite; and,
3. Late Cretaceous feldspar porphyry dykes.
Outcrop on the property is scarce and consists of Paleozoic YTT schist, limestone and quartzite with small outcroppings of local Mount Nansen Group volcanics.
Mineralization & Results
Gold occurs in chalcedonic quartz-sulphide veins and wide zones of silicification along the margins of manganese-stained, locally stibnite-rich, clay-altered quartz-feldspar porphyry dykes. These zones reportedly strike 300° and dip 60-65° to the west. The veins and dykes cut Yukon Tanana metasedimentary rocks consisting of mainly limestone, schist and quartzite.
Drilling in late 1988 and early 1989 intersected several silicified zones with arsenopyrite and subeconomic gold grades. Mineralization seems to be concentrated at the hanging wall of the porphyry. The most significant intersection was a quartz breccia in hole #6 which contained 2.43 g/t Au over 7.5 m, including 10.2 g/t Au over 1.5 m. A 1.5 m massive sulphide vein was encountered at depth in one of the drill holes. Trenching results in 1988 also yielded up to 3.89 g/t Au and 6.9 g/t Ag.
Trenching in 1995 by Atna returned anomalous to highly anomalous gold values over significant widths (e.g. 2.29 g/t over 21.5 m in NT-11).
Conquest Yellowknife Resources drilled 11 holes in 1996. The first 4 holes were drilled to confirm earlier results obtained by Noranda. The remaining 7 holes successfully extended the mineralized zoned to the east, west and down dip and successfully identified a wide zone of intense deformation hosting gold mineralization. Hole DDH-96-2 returned 4.84 g/t Au over 1.59 m and hole DDH-96-8 returned 0.42 g/t Au over 16 m.
A small sampling program by Strategic in 2010 returned background to anomalous gold (up to 23 ppb Au), lead (up to 14 ppm Pb), zinc (up to 85 ppm Zn), arsenic (up to 181 ppm As) and copper (up to 140 ppm Cu). Soil sampling in 2011 returned up to 44 ppb Au, 153 ppm Cu, 68 ppm As, and 116 ppm Zn. Trenching in 2011 also returned significant results with up to 1.43 g.t Au, 0.74 g/t Ag, and 1620 ppm As over 5.0 m; 1.795 g/t Au, 2.4 g/t Ag and 3470 ppm As over 6.0 m; and 1.173 g/t Au, 2.5 g/t Ag and 862 ppm As over 36.0 m.
