Work History
Staked as Cord cl 1-72 (Y97639) in Jul/75 by Rio Tinto Canada Exploration Ltd, which performed mapping and sampling in 1976, hand trenching and an EM survey in 1980, and MaxMin and magnetic surveys plus 366 m of diamond drilling in 4 holes in 1981. The company staked Overburden cl 1-4 (YA64040) in Aug/81, on the southeastern corner of the claim block to cover the extension of prospective geological units identified in the drilling program.
Restaked as Cor cl 1-8 (YBO3260) in Sep/89 by NDU Resources Ltd. No assessment work appears to have been carried out on these claims.
Restaked as Cord 1-40 (YB22287) and cl 41-170 ( YB22351) in Jul/93 by Archer, Cathro and Associates (1981) Ltd. The claims extended to the east onto adjacent map sheet 106C/13. Kennecott Canada Inc optioned the property and conducted geological mapping and soil and rock geochemical sampling in 1993. In 1994 the claims were transferred to Nordac Resources Ltd. In Jun/95 Nordac optioned Cord cl 1-170 (YB22287) to Cominco Ltd. The following month Cominco carried out a exploration program consisting of geological mapping, geophysical surveys and silt and rock sampling. Cominco dropped the option in Jan/96 and returned the claims to Nordac.
Capsule Geology
The occurrence area is located approximately 12 km northeast of the Bear River airstrip, near the eastern headwaters of the eastern branch of an unnamed creek flowing northwards to the Bonnet Plume River. L.H. Green of the Geological Survey of Canada mapped the area at 1:250 000 scale in 1961 as part of a helicopter-supported party known as "Operation Ogilvie". D. Thorkelson (2000) a geologist with the Canada/Yukon Geoscience Office (now part of the Yukon Geological Survey), remapped topographic map sheet 106D/16 in the 1990's as part of a larger bulletin on the Wernecke Mountains. Gordey and Makepeace of the Geological Survey of Canada, released an updated geological compilation of the Yukon in 2003.
The occurrence consists of pyrite, minor galena and sphalerite mineralization in narrow stratiform horizons in dolomitic siltstone and in closely spaced veins within the basal facies of the Lower Proterozoic Gillespie Lake Group. A chip sample collected in 1977 assayed 1.2% zinc and 1.0% lead across 2.1 m. Diamond drilling in 1981 returned 0.6% zinc, 0.5% lead and 3.8 g/t silver over 2.0 m. Lead isotope data produced a Middle Proterozoic model age of 1.50 ± 0.05 Ga.
Mineralization has been identified in two separate stragrapgic sequences, the Main Zone and the Lower Zone. The Main Zone consists primarily of a siderite bed with minor chert and thin magnetite and tuffaceous interbeds. Stratiform galena and sphalerite are found with variable amounts of pyrite within the Main zone. Mineralization in the Lower Zone consists of locally massive pyrite in black carbonaceous shales and a thin chloritic schist unit.
Cominco carried out HLEM, total field magnetics and gravity surveys on the claims in hope that the surveys, gravity in particular, might identify a drill target. Topography made interpretation of the gravity data difficult and would likely overwhelm any response to a buried deposit. The magnetic survey appeared to outline sideritic dolomite associated with mineralized black mudstone and locally developed magnetite Fe-formation. The HLEM survey located conductors which roughly correlated with gravity and magnetic anomalies. The rock and silt analyses were not interpreted by Cominco.
