Work History
Coal was reportedly found by placer miners at this locality in the early 1900's but no staking records have ever been located. This location was staked as Fox cl (YA52922) in Aug/80 by J. Trottier. S. Stempien staked Kostem cl 1 (YA52813) 1.6 km to the south in Aug/80 and performed bulldozer stripping in 1981.
S. Takacs staked Pine cl 1-4 (YA65147) 1.6 km to the northeast in Aug/82 and carried out bulldozer trenching and drilled one hole (3.2 m) in 1983.
Noranda Exploration Company Ltd staked LGC cl 41-64 (YA85179) and LGC cl 97-100 (YA87436) 1 km northwest and 1.5 km southwest, respectively, of the Pine claims in Dec/84. Noranda carried out geological mapping and geochemical sampling in 1985. D. Cuevas staked Gypsy cl (YA89314) on the west side of LGC group in Jun/87.
The occurrence was restaked as Big Gold cl (YA87986) in Aug/87 by D. Downes, and as Rod cl (YB4668) in Feb/88 by S. Dudka. Downes added more claims and carried out bulldozer trenching in 1988 while Dudka carried out geological mapping and geochemical soil sampling before transferring the Rod claims to J. Bergvinson in Feb/89. Bergvinson carried out 411 m of diamond drilling later that year.
A. Downs staked Big Gold cl 1-4 (YB41436) 1 km to the northeast in Sep/92. In 1994, D. Downes carried out 2 081 m3 of trenching on Big Gold cl 2 (YB31517) and 1 020 m3 of trenching on Big Gold cl 4 (YB41439).
Kennecott Canada Exploration Inc optioned the Big Gold cl 1-4 from A. Downs in 1999 and carried out prospecting, geochemical sampling and airborne geophysical surveying before dropping the option the following year.
Capsule Geology
The area is underlain by volcanic rocks consisting of pyroclastic tuffs and breccias with interbedded lignite-bearing Tertiary sediments. The 1980 and 1982 staking was related to nearby gold placer activity and revealed the presence of up to 0.27 g/t Au in White Channel gravel and bedrock.
Noranda's claims were staked to cover the presumed source of stream sediment geochemical anomalies reported by Glasmacher, but Noranda was unable to reproduce any of the anomalies in this area. Kennecott¿s work in 1999 also failed to produce any encouraging results.
