Work History
The northern most showing was staked as Gold cl (Y37945) in Jun/69 by Hart River Mines Ltd, which carried out geological mapping, geochemical sampling and drilled two incomplete holes in 1970, and performed further prospecting in 1971.
Restaked as As cl 1-8 (Y65640) in Aug/72 by Belmoral Mines Ltd, which carried out prospecting in 1972 and prospecting, geological mapping, trenching and geochemical sampling in 1973.
The southern showing was restaked within Aussie cl 1-62 (Y90131) in Sep/74 by the Aussie Syndicate (Silver Standard Mines Ltd and Asarco Inc), which carried out geological mapping and geochemical sampling in 1974 and 1975.
Restaked as Lorrie cl 24-57 and 80-81 (YB23265) in Oct/88 by Walhala Exploration Ltd to form a contiguous claim block with claims the company staked earlier in the year to the northeast (Minfile Occurrence #116A 012). Walhala carried out geological mapping and geochemical sampling in 1989.
In 1990 Walhala sold the Lorrie claims to Tombstone Explorations Company Ltd, which staked Jamie cl 5-215 (YB30680) in Jun/90 to surround the Lorrie claims and carried out prospecting, geological mapping and geochemical sampling of the claim group later that year.
Placer Dome Inc optioned the property in 1991 and performed prospecting, mapping and geochemical sampling before relinquishing the option in Dec/91.
In Sep/97 Homestake Canada Inc staked Java cl 62-79 (YB05301) on the northwest boundary of Tombstone Resources¿ Lorri and Jamie claims. In Nov/97 Homestake Canada Inc optioned the remaining Lorri and Jamie claims (Mike Lake property), from the company and carried out geological mapping, geochemical sampling, blast trenching, airborne and ground geophysical surveying between June and Sep/98. Homestake subsequently dropped the option and returned the property to Tombstone in Jul/99.
Capsule Geology
Gold, silver and copper occur in hornfels near the contact between pyritic shale, quartzite and dolomite of the Cambrian to Ordovician Rabbitkettle assemblage and a small mid-Cretaceous syenite stock. The argillite-syenite contact is marked by a zone of rusty hornfels containing pyrite and pyrrhotite. Two showings are known: north (occurrence A) and south (occurrence B).
At the north showing, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite occur in quartz-filled tension fractures cutting syenite. Early reports document assays up to 0.9% Cu, 278.7 g/t Au and 76.8 g/t Ag, although most values were much lower. Walhala Explorations obtained assays of up to 32.9 g/t Au, 13.3 g/t Ag and 2.99% Cu from vein material in this area (Lorrie cl 13, 14 and 15), and highly anomalous values of As (>30 000 ppm), Ba (5 000 ppm), Sb (11 200 ppm), and to a lesser extent Hg (2 950 ppb) and W (536 ppm).
The south showing consists of disseminated chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite in hornfelsed sedimentary rocks cut by numerous dykes and sills. Samples collected by Wallhala Explorations from rusty hornfels (on Lorrie cl 10) returned anomalous gold, arsenic, copper and zinc values. One sample assayed 6.2% Cu.
Homestake discovered a zone of metasomatic alteration and widespread gold/copper sulfide mineralization 0.5 km southeast of the south showing, which they called Skarn Ridge. The zone which measures approximately 700 by 1 000 m is crosscut by several strong Max/Min conductors and returned anomalous Au/As/Cu/Bi geochemistry. Values up to 387.5 g/t Au were obtained from selected grab samples and 2.0 g/t Au from soil samples. Four of eight trenches in the area exposed bedrock for sampling and the best intervals included 14.5 g/t Au over 6.0 m from Trench #1 and 2.54 g/t Au over 12.0 m from Trench #4. Strong copper values were also obtained form these trenches and included 5 084 ppm Cu over 28 m From Trench #4 and 4 213 ppm Cu over 61 m from Trench #1.
