Work History
Staked as Brandon, Alphonse and Hillsborough cl (10910) in July, 1908 by T. Fawcett, who prospected and trenched prior to 1912. Nearby staking includes Bunker Hill and BC cl (10606) in December, 1907 by J. Cameron, which was re-staked as Regina cl (1357) in February, 1909 and surveyed later in the year.
Re-staked as Caribou, etc cl (79144) in August, 1962 by W. Robertson and as KM cl 1-6 (86998) in August, 1965 by K.W. Miller and C. Anderson.
Re-staked as Klaw cl 1-8 (YA79121) in July, 1983 by Dawson Eldorado Gold Explorations Ltd., which performed mapping and geochemical sampling later in the year. A joint venture between United Keno Hill Mines Ltd. & Falconbridge Ltd. tied on Hun cl 1-60 (YA79929) to the south in June, 1984.
The Klaw claims were re-staked as Law cl 1-12 (YA87985) in May, 1986 by All-North Resources Ltd., which conducted geochemical sampling in 1986 and bulldozer trenching and sampling in 1987. W. Gaven and H. Reinink tied on Who cl 11-26 (YB4918) to the north and west in March, 1988. W. Gordon re-staked the Who claims as Who cl 11-33 (YB23609) in Aug/89.
Arbor Resources Ltd staked Jody cl 1-184 (YB38491) immediately east and north of the Law claims in Sep/90, and trenched on the Jody 187 claim in 1991. Hastings Management Corporation trenched on the Jody claims in 1992.
E. and G. Ahnert staked the Hassenfuss 1 and 2 cl (YB41972) over the veins in June,1993. C.R. Little staked the Maker 1-65 cl (YB44881) in July, 1993 and tied on the New 2,4-8 and 10-26 cl (YB45642) in October, 1993. Arbor Resources Ltd. and Wealth Resources Ltd. jointly optioned the Maker and Hassenfuss cl in August, 1993.
In spring of 1993, Kennecott Canada Inc. optioned all of Arbor Resources claims located in the Klondike region. The optioned claims included the Jody, Hassenfuss and Maker claims. In 1994, Kennecott carried out a large exploration program on Arbor's holdings. Ground geophysical surveys were conducted over airborne magnetic anomalies identified in 1993. Auger drilling tested various soil and geophysical anomalies. Kennecott also carried out additional prospecting, sampling and mapping. In September, 1994 Arbor transferred the remaining Jody claims to Wealth Resources Ltd. In January, 1995 Kennecott dropped its option.
In July, 1995 Arbor Resources conducted soil geochemical surveys around the original Hillsborough and Alphonse claims. In January, 1996 Arbor Resources changed its name to Klondike Gold Corporation.
Barramundi Gold Ltd. staked Pup cl 1-4 (YB68578) northeast of the Hun claims in April, 1996.
Re-staked as Hasenfuss cl 3-4 (YB81780) by E and G Ahnert in June, 1996. Barramundi surrounded the Hasenfuss claims with Pup cl 5-70 (YB88081) in July, 1996. In March, 1999 Barramundi completed 3,850 line km of detailed airborne magnetometer and VLF-EM surveying that covered a 16 km x 24 km area centered about King Solomon Dome and included this occurrence.
Capsule Geology
Several veins and masses of quartz occur in and adjacent to a thrust fault that places a package of chlorite and chlorite-quartz schist and metagabbro (units Psc and Pg) above chlorite schist, muscovite-quartz schist and quartzite (units Psa, Psqm and Psq). Isotopic age determinations on zircons from unit Psqm (Mortensen, 1996) revealed a middle Permian crystallization age of 261 to 263 My. Discontinuous lenses of sheared and strongly altered serpentinite and serpentinized harzburgite occur along the fault zone. The thickness of the placer paystreak on the Right Fork of Hunker Creek and the rough, coarse nature of the placer gold in that paystreak led to intense prospecting of the nearby ridges and the early discovery of the Mitchell and Orekon vein systems at the head of the right fork. A relatively rich paystreak is also present on 24 Pup, a tributary into the left limit of the Right Fork of Hunker, indicating a lode source separate from the Mitchell-Orekon veins. The placer gold on 24 Pup is characteristically very rough, including wire gold and delicate crystalline forms. Quartz is locally found intergrown with the gold.
Early exploration of the area located several bodies of gold-bearing quartz on ground now covered by the Klaw claims. MacLean (1914) examined three of these showings in 1912, including the Brandon claim at the head of 24 Pup, the Hillsborough claim on the left limit of 24 Pup, and the Alphonse claim on the left limit of 39 Pup. MacLean took nine samples, six of which contained higher than trace levels of gold. A sample of pyritic quartz from an open cut on the Brandon claim assayed 1.4 g/t Au and 19.2 g/t Ag. On the Alphonse claim, a weakly pyritic quartz vein striking east and dipping moderately to the north had been uncovered by a series of three trenches over a strike length of 50 m. The vein ranged from 0.6 to 1.2 m in thickness. The best assay obtained by MacLean was a sample taken across the vein at its widest exposure, which returned 4.1 g/t Au.
Most of the old workings in the area are completely caved in and those on the Hillsborough claim have been largely destroyed by bulldozer trenching. Sampling of the old workings returned low values in gold, arsenic and copper. The 1986 geochemical sampling located several moderate gold anomalies, but trenching above the head of the placer paystreak gave disappointing results.
Arbor Resources obtained 200 ppb Au from a sample of sericitic quartzite on the Jody claims in 1991. A 1992 trench exposed a 2 m wide zone of pyritized, silicified breccia in Goldbottom Creek, on trend with the Bornite showing, but all samples assayed were barren.
In 1994 Kennecott used a packsack auger to drill a line of twelve (1 m deep) soil samples on the Maker claims to test a previously discovered regional magnetic high. One sample returned 15 ppb Au while the rest of the holes returned background levels. At the head of Gold Bottom Creek (Jody claims) Kennecott found angular arsenopyrite-bearing quartz boulders. The boulders returned assays of up to 12.5 g/t Au. A total of 96 contour auger soil samples were taken on the left fork, at the head of Gold Bottom Creek, in an attempt to identify the source of the boulders. Several spotty anomalies were found with the best returning 495 ppb Au. Trenching uncovered quartz-galena-pyrite talus assaying up to 31.0 g/t Au. However, trenching clearly indicated that the source was outside of the claims optioned by Kennecott, and near the Mitchell and Sheba occurrences (MINFILE occurrence 115O 068).
In 1995, Arbor collected 186 samples from two separate soil grids. None of the samples returned any significant Au values. Anomalous chromium (Cr) values (up to 252 ppm) were returned from several survey lines. These values are thought to indicate the presence of ultramafic rocks.
