Work History
A short adit was driven here prior to 1940 but the staking records have not been found.
Dawson Range Joint Venture (Straus Exploration Inc, Molybdenum Corp of America Ltd, Trojan Consolidated Mines Ltd, and Great Plains Development Company of Canada Ltd) carried out a regional exploration program in the area but did not stake any claims on this occurrence.
Staked as SS cl 1-24 (Y39715), 35-60 (Y39749) and 69-158 (Y39783) in Nov/69 by Nicanex Mines Ltd. The company added Nick cl 9-26 (Y40212) and cl 41-96 (Y40230) to the east side of the SS claim group later in the month. Nicanex likely carried out soil and silt sampling programs on the claims.
Restaked within Hayes cl 1-100 (YE23916) and cl 101-1316 (YE22701) in Jun/2011 by Ethos Capital Corp. The claims are subject to prior option agreement negoiatated between the company and S. Ryan and Wildwood Exploration Inc covering the adjoining Betty property (Minfile Occurrences # 115 J 069, 070, 071 and 074). Ethos Capital reportedly carried out soil sampling, prospecting, geological mapping programs and flew an airborne magnetic and radiometric survey over the claim block in 2011.
GEOLOGY
The area was reconnaissance mapped by D. Templeman-Kluit in 1974. Gordey and Makepeace (2003) released a geological compilation that covered this area. In 2006, M. Colpron of the Yukon Geological Survey released a Tectonic Assemblage map which included this portion of the Yukon-Tanana Terrane. Recently J. Ryan, C. Roots and others employed by the Geological Survey of Canada have been conducting geological mapping in the area as part of a joint project with the Yukon Geological Survey. Various maps and other products are tentatively scheduled to be pubically released in 2012.
The Hayes property covers most of the Selwyn River and Hayes Creek drainages in west-central Yukon. The property is underlain by metamorphic rocks which Gordey and Makepeace assigned to the Devonian to Mississippian Nasina assemblage. Recent work by J. Ryan suggests that these rocks likely belong to the slightly younger Permian aged Klondike Schist assemblage. The western half of the property is intruded by mid-Cretaceous granodiorite assigned to the Dawson Range batholith.
A 1944 geology map of the Selwyn Creek area, created by H. S. Bostock of the Geological Survey of Canada identified a site known as the “Discovery Placer Cabin” approximately 0.75 km northeast of the occurrence location. The cabin site marked the location where prior to 1940 government geologists reported finding float containing sulphides and fluorite crystals. The float is assumed to originate from an adit dug into the side of cliff at the occurrence location. No mineralization was found in the adit and it is believed to have been driven on a barren quartz vein hosted by mid-Cretaceous granodiorite. Separate regional prospecting and geochemical sampling programs carried out by both the Dawson Range Joint Venture and Nicanex Mines are believed not to have uncovered any signs of mineralization in the occurrence area.
Ethos Capital has not yet released any results from their 2011 exploration program on the Hayes claim block.
