Work History
Staked by E.M. Flynn in Aug/52 as 84 Mars, etc cl (63475), which were prospected in 1952 and 1953. Part of the group - Ursus cl 1-8 (63682) - was transferred to New Alger Mines Ltd in 1952.
The area north of this occurrence was restaked as SJ cl 1-16 (YA78575) in Oct/83 by AGIP Canada Ltd and as O.K. cl 1-8 (YA95718) to the east in Aug/86 by R. McIntosh and F. Ellis. The SJ claims were restaked as Mary cl 1-10 (YA96191) in Sep/86 by L. Smith, who carried out trenching.
In May/87, Reed Creek Joint Venture (All-North Resources Ltd, Chevron Minerals Ltd and Fleck Resources Ltd) staked Reed cl 1-42 (YA97208) to the west-northwest and Swede cl 1-27 (YA97307) and Valley cl 1-57 (YA97250) to the east-southeast which carried out geochemical sampling and prospecting later that year.
The actual occurrence was restaked as Eugene cl 1-44 (YB08097) in Sep/87 by Arch Joint Venture (All-North Resources Ltd, Chevron Minerals Ltd, Rockridge Mining Corporation and Pak-Man Resources Inc), after prospecting and soil sampling traverses relocated strong anomalies that were first identified by regional geochemical sampling reportedly carried out by Chevron in 1981.
In Aug/90, R. McIntosh and F. Ellis began restaking part of the lapsed Swede claim group as Ross cl 1-14 (YB27831). McIntosh and Ellis then restaked other parts of the Swede and Valley claims as KC cl 1-7 (YB3620), NJ cl 1-8 (YB36267) and BC cl 1-4 (YB36275) in Aug/91 and FRM cl 1-7 (YB36945) in Jul/92 forming a contiguous group of claims with their O.K. claims which were visited and sampled by Placer Dome Exploration Ltd in Aug/92.
In Sep/90, L. Smith staked Graham cl 1-5 (YB27980) to the northeast and Gamble cl 1-4 and 7-8 (YB27985) to the southeast of the Mary claims and carried out trenching in 1991; and drilling and blasting in 1992. G. Smith staked Glenn cl 1-7 (YB06361) northwest of the Mary claims in Aug/91 and carried out hand pitting and trenching in 1992 and blast trenching in 1993. L. Smith carried out hand trenching, drilling and blasting on the Mary and Glenn claims in Aug/94 and in Oct/94 L. Smith and D. Makkonen carried out drilling and blasting on the Graham and Gamble claims.
McIntosh and Ellis carried out prospecting, geochemical sampling and geological mapping of their combined claim holdings in the area, the Ross Property, from 2000 to 2002.
Capsule Geology
This area lies within the Kluane Mafic-Ultramafic Belt, north of the Quill Creek Intrusive Complex which hosts the Wellegreen deposit (Minfile Occurrence #115G 024). The occurrence location is underlain by Upper Triassic Nikolai volcanic rocks, while most of the staking to the north and the northeast covers areas that are primarily underlain by a northwest-trending belt of Skolai Group Lower Permian slate and limestone of the Hasen Creek Formation and andesite pyroclastic rocks of the Pennsylvanian Station Creek Formation that have been cut by quartz-feldspar to hornblende feldspar porphyry dykes of Ogliocene age.
Volcanic float containing chalcopyrite, barite, pyrite and pyrrhotite has been found in the creeks draining to the north, which cut the northwest-trending belt of Skolai Group rocks. A specimen of rusty diorite taken at the head of the south branch of Swede Johnson Creek assayed 1.45% Ni, but no bedrock source was located.
Gold values up to 8.6 g/t were obtained from specimens of quartz-carbonate altered Nikolai volcanics on the Eugene claims, while nearby soils returned greater than 10 000 ppb Au. Soil samples from the Valley claims returned anomalous gold, copper, nickel, platinum and palladium values.
Anomalous and sometimes spectacular gold values from silt, soil and rock samples have been returned from sampling on the Ross Property. Examinations by Placer Dome in 1992 of the O.K. claims, now in the central part of the property, identified a series of anastomosing, imbricated faults within the Skolai group rocks. The northwest-southeast trending faults and associated shear zones are host to multiple phases of quartz veining accompanied by hydrothermal alteration. Brownlee (1992) for Placer Dome concluded that gold mineralization in the area is associated with the quartz veins emplaced along the northwest-southeast trending faults and shears. Southwest-northeast trending structures which control the drainage of some of the creeks in the area most likely provided additional structural preparation of the host rocks.
