Capsule

Work History

Acquired in Nov/77 as Coal E Licence #82 by Pan Ocean OL, which explored with 4 drill holes (463 m) in 1979. The area was relicensed as #139 in Nov/80 and #371 in Nov/83.

Capsule Geology

Coal float was traced to surface exposures and found to occur within a typical Lower Bonnet Plume Formation exposure of conglomerate, sandstone and shale. The best hole (79-5) cut a 4.6 m thick seam of coal with partings of carbonaceous shale, which gave the following specifications: yield 54.7%, moisture 3.0%, ash 15.4%, volatiles 35.8%, fixed carbon 45.9%, sulphur <0.5%, and specific energy 10 400 BTU/lb.
The coal occurs within a 5 to 15° east-dipping monocline. One hole 1.5 km to the east and two holes 2 km and 3 km to the south failed to locate coal, indicating that the seam cut by hole 79-5 is limited in extent.
