Work History
Staked as Al, Kirk and Fargo cl (Y5746) in May/66 by R. Kirk, J.J. O'Neill and G.E. Stephen and optioned by Munster ML late that year. The adjoining Do cl (96773) were staked in Dec/65 by Cinola ML. Both companies conducted preliminary surveys in 1966 and 1967.
Restaked as Fargo, Kirk etc cl (Y24694) in May/68 by M. Early and optioned by Sunset Mg Corp L, which explored with geophysical surveys and bulldozing in 1969. The Viru cl (Y60615) were staked around the key claims in May/71 by Viru EL. The Sunset option was terminated in late 1972.
Early enlarged the property in 1973-74, performed trenching in 1974 and optioned it to Cyprus Anvil, which conducted a gravity survey in 1975. Early then optioned the property in 1977 to the Woodside Project (Getty and Welcome North), which added the adjoining PMJ, MONI, etc cl (YA18282) in Jun/77 and explored with mapping, geochem, EM and mag surveys and 6 x-ray holes (173.7 m) and 2 BQ holes (237.4 m). J.B. O'Neill tied on the APEX cl (YA19092) to the west in Jun/77 and optioned them to Bronson ML. Woodside conducted more Maxmin, EM, mag and geochem surveys in 1978.
Restaked as Craig cl (YB8260) in Sep/87 by J. Murnion who added Spud cl (YB20575) to the north and west in Jul/88 and performed trenching and sampling later that year and in 1989. The claims apparently expired and were restaked in Sep/93 by J. Murnion as the Spud 1- 60 cl (YB38331), which cover both this and the Sir John A occurrence (MINFILE #105K 105) a few km to the northwest.
Capsule Geology
The original showings are discontinuous narrow lenses of galena and straw coloured sphalerite which occur along two parallel fault zones which strike east-west and dip steeply north. The faults are 75 m apart, up to 12 m wide and are intermittently exposed for a length of 200 m on the north limb of a broad east-trending anticline in Lower Cambrian phyllite.
The best zone exposed in trenches on the North (No. 1) Vein assayed 30.7% Pb, 0.1% Zn and 157.7 g/t Ag across 1.01 m while the best exposure on the South (No. 2) Vein assayed 5.2% Pb, 10.3% Zn and 72.0 g/t Ag across 0.99 m. Soil sampling outlined an associated geochemical anomaly 365 m long lead-zinc anomaly. The gravity survey gave a flat response.
The Woodside work was directed toward massive bands of galena and sphalerite up to 10 cm thick in a 24 m thick section of overlying Road River Formation shale (Ordovician to Lower Devonian). The best intersections obtained in the drilling were 4.6 m grading 10.3% Pb in Hole WS2 and 4.6 m grading 2.3% Zn in Hole WS4.
Woodside geologists recognized that mineralization occurs at three separate stratigraphic horizons. The lowest consists of thin laminae of sphalerite and galena in Lower Cambrian impure marble and calcareous phyllite and biotite-garnet schist. The second mineralized layer occurs about 60 m higher and consists of small sphalerite-galena showings in siderite-pyrrhotite-magnetite-garnet-actinolite skarns developed in calcareous beds within graphitic biotite schist. The third consists of scattered stratiform occurrences in the Road River Formation sooty limestone and calcareous argillite. The 1989 trenching exposed two narrow veins at the margin of a 50 m wide graphitic gouge zone.
