Work History
Staked as Joy cl 1-60 (Y27976) in Sep/67 by Spartan Exploration Ltd, which carried out grid soil sampling, geological mapping, prospecting and magnetometer surveying in 1968. In Aug-Oct/75, 120 Itsi, Pre, Vost and River claimsl (Y84427) were staked immediately north and east of the Joy group by Abacorn Syndicate (Cream Silver Mines Ltd, Belmoral Mines Ltd, Grandora Exploration Ltd, Abacorn Mining Ltd, Pan Acheron Resources Ltd and Minas de Cerro Dorado Ltd), which carried out geological mapping, prospecting and geochemical sampling (for zinc) in 1975 and rock sampling in 1975-76, before transferring the claims to Trident Resources Ltd.
The Itsi property was optioned briefly in 1977 by Rio Tinto Canadian Exploration Ltd, which reanalysed the soil samples for Ag, Cu, Co, Mo, Ni and Pb and carried out geological mapping and hand trenching later in the year.
Restaked in Sep/93 as the Bure cl 1-4 (YB46321) by NDU Resources Ltd. NDU staked Bure cl 5-60 (YB91203) in Dec/97 before merging with United Keno Hill Mines Ltd in the spring of 1998. Expatriate Resources Ltd optioned the claims and carried out hand trenching, grid soil sampling and silt sampling later in the year. Expatriate purchased a 100% interest in the property from United Keno Hill in Oct/98.
Capsule Geology
Spartan located a pyrrhotite-rich boulder containing scheelite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite, which assayed 3% WO3. The boulder was found at the west end of an east-trending syncline. Bedrock in the area consists of chert, shale and dolomite of the Lower to Middle Devonian Portrait Lake Formation which is cut by occasional porphyry dykes. Although the source was not found, weak zinc and molybdenum soil anomalies were outlined near the dykes.
Abacorn located five zones containing secondary zinc and lead minerals and obtained assays of up to 2% Zn. Rio Tinto's mapping showed that the mineralization and geochemical anomalies are underlain by a typical sequence of Road River Formation mudstone and minor bedded barite. Chip sampling of broken, weathered bedrock in trenches gave assays of up to 10.0% Zn and 1.6% Pb across 3 m and 3.3% Zn and 6.7% Pb, but grades decreased as the trenches were deepened. Petrographic study and assaying showed that no sulphides were present and all mineralization had been transported hydromorphically.
Expatriate's sampling covered known anomalies in the area and returned generally coincident values for Zn (up to 3 010 ppm), Ni (up to 367 ppm), Ag (up to 10.6 ppm), Cu (up to 462 ppm), Pb (up to 6 700 ppm) and Cd (up to 67.5 ppm). Trenching exposed weathered bedrock, but no determination of the style of mineralization present could be made. Peak values of 3.31% Zn, 4 790 ppm Pb and 116.5 ppm Cd were obtained from a 4.0 m chip sample.
