Work History
First staked in Sep/77 as part of Tom cl 1-276 (YA26155) by St Joseph Explorations Ltd, which performed mapping, rock and silt sampling in 1978. In 1988, International Rhodes Resources Ltd flew airborne geophysical surveys over the property as part of its exploration of the adjoining Ran claim block (not staked sequentially #199 = YB9169), and further explored with geochemistry and a remote sensing study.
Restaked in May & Jun/91 as Blackhawk cl 1-24 (YB33936) and cl 25-50 (YB33970) by A. Carlos, who explored with prospecting, limited geochemical sampling and a VLF survey between June and Sep/91. The adjoining Ran claims were transferred to Carlos in Feb/92.
In Feb/93, Carlos optioned the property to YGC Resources Ltd which dug 8 trenches (950 m) in Sep and Oct/93. Carlos transferred the Blackhawk claims to YGC Resources in Oct/94. In 1995 the company drilled 1 diamond drill hole (56.39 m) to the north, on Ran cl #631.
Capsule Geology
The occurrence area covers both Paleozoic sedimentary rocks found south of the Tintina Trench and younger Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks located within the Tintina Fault zone. The area received significant work following the discovery of the Grew Creek epithermal gold deposit in 1983 (Minfile Occurrence #105K 009). The deposit is hosted by Eocene volcanic and sedimentary rocks deposited in a pull-apart basin within the Tintina Fault zone.
St. Joseph Exploration explored for lead-zinc deposits in the Paleozoic sediments. Soil sampling outlined a broad low order zinc anomaly.
International Rhodes Resources Ltd. identified a mercury (>100 ppb) soil and humus geochemical anomaly and a broad, weak gold geochemical anomaly (>20 ppb) while exploring for epithermal gold deposits. The 1988 airborne survey identified two circular magnetic lows, thought to represent Tertiary felsic igneous rocks and a number of linear magnetic highs, thought to indicate mafic igneous rocks (Lebel and Raven, 1988).
The Blackhawk claims cover a gossanous outcrop of Cambrian to Ordovician age silicified calcareous phyllite located on the western edge of the Tintina trench. Carlos excavated a hand pit on a multi-element geochemical anomaly at the northeast corner of Blackhawk claim #6, and sampled surficial material consisting of fragments of rusty phyllite and minor till. Two heavy mineral concentrates obtained by panning the gossanous material contained 17 588 ppb Au and 63 400 ppb Au, although no visible gold was observed. The bedrock beneath was not anomalous (Carlos, 1992).
Trenching in 1993 exposed thin bedded carbonaceous argillite, shale and siltstone overlying orange weathering silty limestone and calcareous phyllite (Stroshein, 1993). Twenty out of 144 rock chip samples returned gold values above the detection limit (<35 ppb max). These samples were generally associated with graphitic or pyritic shear zones.
The 1995 tricone drill hole collared on Ran cl #631, located in the Tintina Fault Zone, tested geophysical anomalies. It intersected 29 m of black argillaceous organic rich Tertiary sediments beneath a thick blanket of glacial till and outwash sediments. The hole was abandoned at 56.39 m. Two grab samples were collected from the black clay, one of which returned 377 ppb Au (Stroshein, 1995).
