Work History
Staked as Bee cl 1-24 (Y91728) between Dec/74 and Jul/75 by L. Patenode, who carried out bulldozer trenching from 1975 to 78. J. Suits staked Bee cl 28-35 (YA18302) to the east in Jun/77. The Bee claims (including the adjoining Bee cl 25-27 staked by R. Suits, Minfile Occurrence #105D 202) were subsequently explored by Whitehorse Copper Mines Ltd, which carried out magnetometer surveying, geochemical sampling and geological mapping in 1979 and 1980, and IP surveying in 1980 under an option that terminated in early 1981.
In 1983 Silver Sabre Resources Ltd carried out linecutting followed by C.E.M., magnetometer, and VLF-EM surveying and bulldozer trenching on the Bee cl 28-35 (the `B¿ location of this occurrence). In 1984 all of the Bee claims in the area were transferred to Silver Sabre Resources Ltd, which staked Cee cl 1-13 (YA82524) to the south in Jun/84, Cee cl 14-19 (YA82576) to the west in Jul/84, carried out trenching and staked Cee cl 20-27 (YA85579) to the southwest in Oct/84. Between Aug/84 and Jun/85 Silver Sabre and Noranda Exploration Company Ltd carried out prospecting and rock sampling, followed by trenching and geochemical silt and soil sampling on the grid covering the `B¿ location of this occurrence (Noranda¿s Grid No. 2).
Noranda Exploration Company Ltd staked Bee cl 36-63 (YA86575) adjoining to the east and west from April to Jul/85, before formally optioning the property in Aug/85. The company carried out geological mapping, prospecting, geochemical soil, silt and rock sampling, HLEM and magnetometer surveying and bulldozer trenching on the central part of the claim group (Grid No. 3, which covers this occurrence and the adjoining Minfile Occurrence #105D 202 to the west), later that year before dropping the option.
Silver Sabre carried out rotary drilling of two holes (156.97 m) and cat trenching just east of this occurrence and 300 m further to the south-southwest in 1986. The company also carried out detailed geological mapping of Noranda¿s 1985 Grid No. 3 at this time.
Silver Sabre carried out shallow test pitting to facilitate resampling of Noranda¿s 1985 soil grid during 1989 and 1990, collecting a total of 159 samples, and subsequently carried out excavator trenching and detailed rock chip sampling in the area from June and Jul/90. In Jul/93 cat trenching was carried out on the Cee cl #10, approximately 1 km to the south-southwest of this occurrence.
Hemlo Gold Mines Inc examined the property in Oct/95 and resampled the 1984-86 trenches excavated within the rhyolite unit.
Silver Sabre drilled a single rotary drill hole (45.72 m) on this occurrence (the East Showing) in 1997; carried out geological mapping, induced polarization and resistivity surveying and drilled three holes (138.7 m) 100 m west of the showing in 1999; prospecting and geochemical rock sampling of the area in 2000; and total field magnetic and VLF-EM surveying from Dec/2000 to Jan/2001.
Capsule Geology
The occurrence lies in the overburden covered Yukon River valley at the northern end of the Whitehorse Copper Belt, an area which has been extensively explored since the early 1900's. The area is underlain by a folded sequence of Late Triassic Lewes River Group clastic sediments, primarily greywacke, argillite, sandstone, mudstone and tuff with intercalated limestone and a thick bed of Triassic limestone. The sequence is intruded to the southwest by the Haeckel Hill Pluton, a Late Paleocene biotite granite pluton assigned to the Nisling Range Plutonic Suite which is exposed in the core of a large east-west trending anticline.
The occurrence, commonly known as the East showing, consists of a rhyolite body or sill which hosts gold-sulphide mineralization in quartz veins and as disseminations within a 75 m long shear zone in the axial region of the anticline. In addition skarn boulders containing bornite and chalcopyrite in overburden have been reported to the east on the adjoining We claims.
Work completed by Silver Sabre Resources and Noranda between 1983-1985 identified the rhyolite body or sill which lies immediately north of the Haeckel Hill Pluton. Its position coincides with two highly anomalous pan concentrated stream sediment samples (14 000 and 16 000 ppb Au, respectively). Hart (1974) concluded that the rhyolite is a satellite body of the Late Paleocene Haeckel Hill Pluton. Following a geophysical survey, the rhyolite body was trenched, exposing the east-west trending shear zone, which carries thin quartz veins containing galena and sphalerite, that returned 1 300 ppb Au over 0.37 m.
Silver Sabre¿s 1986 drill program tested the mineralization potential below the trenches. The holes yielded low anomalous gold values (up to 280 ppb over 1.52 m) from rhyolite cut by minor druzy quartz veins. The 1990 test pitting program returned numerous anomalous (>100 ppb) gold samples along an approximate northeast trend. Eight of twelve excavator trenches completed at that time failed to penetrate the local overburden and the other four trenches yielded low gold values.
In 1993 a breccia occurrence in the granite was located and sampled on Cee cl 10. Samples returned up to 2 143 ppb Au, 2.5 ppm Ag, 5 090 ppm Pb and 5 160 ppm Zn. Rock samples from nearby trenches returned values up to 158 ppb Au, 10.9 ppm Ag, and 2 208 ppm Cu.
The 1997 rotary drill hole collared on the rhyolite occurrence intersected interlayered meta-mudstone and rhyolite that returned a peak value of 685 ppb Au over 1.52 m.
Geophysical surveying in 1999 detected coincident chargeability highs and resistivity lows that weaken to the west, the source of which is a zone of disseminated and stringer mineralization consisting of pyrite and pyrrhotite concentrated within the axial region of the east-west trending anticline. Locally anomalous, but sub-economic gold mineralization (averaging 70 ppb over 25.6 m) was encountered in Hole 99-1 within the sulfide bearing zone at the intrusive contact, but outside of the shear zone. Gold mineralization in this occurrence has no electromagnetic or total magnetic field response as determined by surveying in 2000/01.
