Work History

The showing was discovered in 1906 and exposed by hand trenching in the next few years. Restaked as coal leases #2933 by C. O'Connell and 2934 by J. Johns in Nov/42. Messrs. Foster and Kerry acquired leases adjoining one owned by C. McConnell in 1946.
Acquired as part of Coal Exploration Licence #20 by N.H. Ursel and Assoc L in Mar/71, explored with mapping, shallow drilling and hand trenching in 1975, and staked as BS mineral cl (YA4138) in Dec/75 by R. Schumacher, etc. The surrounding area was acquired as Coal Exploration Licence #33 by A.T. Savage in Nov/75.

Capsule Geology

The old showing consists of 0.45, 1.8 and 0.9 m thick seams exposed in hand trenches on the crest of a sharp ridge. The coal occurs in a small patch of badly faulted Tantalus Formation, 3.2 km long and less than 0.8 km wide. A gross calorific value of 15,600 G. BTU was reported by the GSC on a sample from the thickest seam. An analysis in 1975 at the Detroit Testing Lab showed 31.9% volatiles, 49.3% fixed carbon, 16.2% ash, 0.3% sulphur and a gross calorific value of 10,080 BTU/lb.
