Work History
The first claims were staked in 1906 by G. Stevens, M. Gilliam, O. Dickson (Acme cl) and C.E. Burnside (Hawk Eye group), who explored with 3 short adits and a number of trenches. Restaked about 1920 as the Midnight group (18891) by M. Watson and E. Johnson, and Gladys, Sarah J claims (18907) by T. Brooks, who did more drifting and trenching until 1940. Brooks and Watson restaked the Acme claims farther uphill near the ridge crest as the Hidden Ore group (19082) about 1933 and trenched until 1940. In the fall of 1939, the property was optioned by J.B. White of Spokane.
Restaked as MO cl(4589) and Cub cl (56208) in 1947 by P.M. Lander, who did only minor work. Restaked as Minite cl (85059) in Apr/63 by F. Merryth; as Brooks cl (Y10065) in Aug/66 by G. Simmons and W. Phelps; as EB cl (Y78480) in Apr/74 by C. Bernier; as Ram cl (YA22403) in Mar/78 by G. Sherman.
Island Mg & EL tied on JL cl (YA59033) to the east in Oct/80 and performed mapping and sampling in 1981. Restaked as Ton cl (YA78181) in Aug/83 by Can Nickel (Inco), which performed mapping and geochem sampling later in the year and optioned the property to Island Mg & ECL. Island performed more mapping and geochem sampling in 1985 and drilled 5 holes (411.4 m) in 1986, and 4 holes (453.8 m) on claims JL 17 & 18 and 4 holes (335.3 m) on claim Ton 10 in 1987.
Capsule Geology
A large quartz lens 30 m long and 9 m wide carrying a little galena and pyrite was found on the Acme claims, on top of Mt Stevens. All other showings are on the east slope of the mountain. Two quartz veins 0.6 and 1.1 m wide were found on the Hawk Eye claims. These veins contained disseminated galena and chalcopyrite. Later work on the Midnight group showed that mineralization is related to altered granite porphyry dykes 7.6 to 15 m wide, which cut altered volcanic rocks. Early government reports indicated that these dykes are highly sericitized and seamed by myriad quartz veinlets which locally contain native gold, pyrite and galena. Gold values are restricted to sulphide zones, which in turn are localized along cross-fractures cutting the dykes. On the Hidden Ore claims near the granodiorite contact, the dykes were reportedly so fractured and altered that they resembled breccias cemented by quartz veins 0.6 to 5 cm wide. Native gold, galena, pyrite and minor sphalerite and chalcopyrite were present in the quartz.
A surface examination in 1972 failed to substantiate previous descriptions although limonite-stained quartz veins are present. Pyrite and galena-rich samples of quartz assayed less than 0.34 g/t Ag and 0.07 g/t Au. Soil sampling returned only background metal values.
Work in 1985-87 located three types of mineralization on the east slope of Mt Stevens and the headwaters of Stevens Creek: (1) gold-silver bearing quartz veins in rhyolite dykes; (2) galena-bearing quartz veins with gold and silver values in quartz diorite; and (3) galena-sphalerite-pyrite fracture fillings in quartz diorite. Results were generally disappointing, with the highest values coming from a specimen of galena-bearing quartz float that assayed 486 g/t Ag, 22 g/t Au and 1% Pb, and a thin quartz vein cutting a rhyolite dyke in a drill hole, which assayed 4 g/t Ag and 11.5 g/t Au over 46 cm.
