Work History
The southernmost occurrence location was first noted by the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) in 1915 and was rediscovered by E. Johnson along with a second antimony showing located approximately 1.5 km to the north on the north side of Mt Reid prior to 1939. If claims were staked, the records have been destroyed and no assessment work was filed for the area during this period.
Staked as Aur cl 1-8 (YA3064) in Jul/75 by Canadian Superior Exploration Ltd, which carried out geological mapping and geochemical soil sampling; as Mike cl 1-8 and Jon cl 1-6 (YA48492) in Mar/80 by J. Millhouse, who carried out geological mapping and geochemical sampling; and as Woof cl 1-40 (YA75009) in Sep/82 by Agip Canada Ltd, which carried out prospecting, geological mapping and geochemical rock and soil sampling in 1983 before entering a joint venture with Erickson Gold Mines Ltd in 1984. Erickson changed its name to Total Erickson Resources Ltd in 1985.
Omni Resources Inc tied on Tex cl 1-22 (YA92833) to the south of the Woof claims in Jul/85 and optioned them to Island Mining and Exploration Company Ltd, which reportedly carried out road building and drilling in 1987, although no record of this work could be located. The Tex claims were transferred to National Trust Company in Sep/91and back to Omni in Sep/97, which had earlier formed a joint venture with Trumpeter Yukon Gold Inc to develop these and other claims held in the area..
The Woof claims were restaked as TM cl 1-117 (YB66868) in May/96 by BYG Natural Resources Inc. These claims were later transferred to Omni Resources in Oct/2000, after a claim of lien was filed against BYG in Mar/99. In Nov/2000 Omni amalgamated with Trumpeter to form Tagish Lake Gold Corporation.
Capsule Geology
The main or southernmost of the two occurrence locations in underlain by granodiortie of the mid-Cretaceous Mt. McNeil Pluton which is overlain to the north by gently dipping, felsic volcanic rocks of the Lower Eocene Mount Skukum Volcanic Complex. The Berney Creek fault zone which trends easterly across the area, seperates the volcanic complex from the older plutonic rock south of the fault.
Work by Agip was directed toward the gold potential of the area and focused on sampling areas of favourable lithologies, veining, alteration or where strong iron staining was present. The company collected numerous rock samples along and adjacent to the Berney Creek fault in areas where quartz-calcite veining was quite extensive. Chip samples over widths ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 m collected across veined areas returned a couple of weak copper values up to 2 370 ppm, one of which also contained 41 ppm Ag. Gold values were all below the detection limit of the analysis, except for one weak value of 5 ppb. One sample collected near the eastern property boundary returned 800 ppb Hg, but contained low levels for other elements.
Reconnaissance style soil sampling along the fault zone and in other widespread areas across the Woof claims revealed a number of single station anomalies ranging from 50 to 100 ppb Au, with a peak value of 250 ppb from sample #1237001 in the vicinity of the chip sample that contained the elevated Hg value of 800 ppb.
