Work History

Staked as Red Top and Amber Spring cl (72569) in Jun/56 by A.E. Johnson and W.J. Thompson. Restaked as Superior cl (73177) in Sep/57 by E. Armitage; as Key cl (Y29073) in Mar/69 by J. Babwik; as Smeg cl (Y55389) in Jul/71 by Wolf Lake Joint Venture (Rayrock Mines Ltd, Ashland Oil Canada Ltd and Canadian Industrial Gas and Oil Ltd), which carried out geological mapping and geochemical sampling later in the year.
Restaked as Bar cl 1-8 (YA0026) in Jun/76 and Bar cl 9-20 (YA00913) in Aug/76 by J.C. Stephen on behalf of the DC Syndicate (Dome Mines Ltd and Cominco Ltd), which carried out geological mapping, geochemical soil sampling and an IP survey in 1977; a magnetometer survey and rock trenching in 1978; and drilled 4 holes (340 m) in 1980.
In 1981, the claims reverted to Stephen and were optioned to Chevron Canada Ltd, which carried out linecutting, geological mapping and geochemical sampling in 1981 and 1982.
In 1982, Stephen staked Abba cl 1-8 (YA68502) immediately east of the Bar claims and carried out geological mapping, magnetometer surveying and geochemical soil sampling later that year.
After Chevron dropped its option, the claims were transferred to Comox Resources Ltd (Cambac Resources Ltd), which carried out geological mapping, geochemical sampling, VLF-EM and IP surveying and trenching in 1983. Comox drilled 5 holes (608 m) in 1985.
Restaked as the Eng cl 1-144 (YB46007) in Aug/93 by Cominco Ltd. In June and Jul/94 Cominco personnel carried out UTEM electromagnetic, magnetometer and gravity surveying over the west-central portion of the claim block and drilled two holes (536.4 m) in 1997.

Capsule Geology

Three areas of mineralization occur in an area of Carboniferous shale, chert sandstone and chert pebble conglomerate overlain by Mississippian tuff and limestone. Early work focused on a massive bedded barite deposit at least 15 m thick that occurs at the base of a grey-green, pyritic chert unit of Early Mississippian age. Thin lamellae and veinlets of pyrite and minor lenses of galena-sphalerite-tetrahedrite are abundant in the lower part of the barite.
Drilling showed that a pyrite zone up to 24 m thick underlies the barite, and veins of massive pyrite and barite-galena up to 3 or 4 m thick crosscut footwall stratigraphy beneath the barite and pyrite layers. No bedding or zoning is apparent in the barite or pyrite although both are roughly conformable with host rocks. A 6 to 20 m wide dyke of hornblende microdiorite cuts the lower part of the section near the showing.
Southeast of the stratiform barite body, a southeast-trending IP anomaly 250 m wide and 700 m long, adjoins a silicified zone with a coincident resistivity high and a lead, silver and thallium geochemical signature. Holes 85-7 and 85-8 tested the IP anomaly and intersected scattered zones of weak pyrite-galena-sphalerite mineralization with low silver values. Two 1985 holes (6 and 6A) tested the silicified zone and intersected 25 m of scattered pyrite-galena-sphalerite mineralization. The best assay graded 2.8% Zn, 0.4% Pb and 32 g/t Ag over 90 cm.
The third area of interest is a zone of spectacular exotic limonite gossans developed along a thrust fault that has placed the footwall limestone sequence over the Mississippian rocks about 1.2 km southwest of the main zone. These gossans are anomalous in zinc, mercury, antimony, thallium and arsenic. Hole 85-5 was drilled to explore for the source of these anomalies but intersected only a 40 m wide zone of barren silicification.
The objective of Cominco's geophysical surveying was to test the ability of the UTEM electromagnetic system to locate conductive mineral deposits. Although Cominco did not comment on the property geology or potential targets, it appears the survey was aimed at locating an extension of the barite hosted stratiform pyrite-galena-sphalerite mineralization discovered by Comox Resources in 1985. The survey was not successful due to the conductive nature of the rocks underlying the survey area.
The 1997 drilling tested the barite hosted stratiform pyrite-galena-sphalerite mineralized horizon over a 400 m strike length. Both holes intersected minor sphalerite and galena mineralization, as well as several intervals of veined to massive pyrite. The best core assays of mineralized barite returned 2.5% Zn, 0.6% Pb and 22% Ba over a 1m core length.
