Work History

Sayyea Creek marks the location in 1874, where coarse placer gold was discovered for the first time in the Yukon. Numerous subsistence miners have worked the creeks in the intervening period.
In 1976 Sayyea Creek Mining Company Ltd carried out a reconnaissance scale sampling program aimed at testing the placer potential of the region. Although the company reported minor amounts of visible gold in bedrock no quartz claims were ever staked by the company.
In 1983 Karat Mines Ltd carried out test mining of the placer gravels on Sayyea Creek, 4 kms west of the occurrence.
Staked as a single Fox claim (YB45921) in Jul/93 by F. Hasselberg. Hasselberg likely staked the claim in conjunction with placer claims he owned on Sayyea Creek.

Capsule Geology

The area lies in an overburden-covered area within the Tintina Trench and is likely underlain by sedimentary rocks assigned to the Cassiar Terrane. The area was originally mapped by Poole (1951-1955) and Roddick and Green (1959) of the Geological Survey of Canada. No recent geological mapping has been carried out in the immediate area.
D. Murphy mapped topographic map sheets 105B 10 and 11 (located to the southwest) at 1:50 000 scale in 1987. Gordey and Makepeace of the Geological Survey of Canada released a geological compilation of the Yukon in 2003. Extrapolation of data from these geological maps suggest the occurrence is underlain by Upper Proterozoic quartzite, phyllite and limestone assigned to the Tsaydiz Formation of the Ingenik Assemblage.
Sayyea Creek Mining Company collected an unknown number of hand dug 500 kg samples of placer material along the length of Sayyea Creek. No gold values were reported. Karat Mines Ltd tested mined several areas along Sayyea Creek and reported the presence of both coarse and fine gold.
