Work History
Staked as Bulldomb, Cariboo Horn, etc cl (15693) in Apr/32 by Matthew Watson & Patsy Henderson, in conjunction with nearby placer activity.
Restaked as Matthew cl 1-6 (YA71354) in Jun/84 and Matt cl 7-48 (YA73626) in Aug/85 by M. Holloway, who carried out geochemical sampling in 1985 and hand trenching in 1986. In 1987 the claims were optioned to Total Erickson Resources Ltd, which drilled 6 holes (788.5 m) in Jan/88. M. Holloway staked the Ron cl 1-48 (YB10926) and Bud cl 1-48 (YB11022) 2 km to the west in Jan/88 and surrounded the Mathew claims with Oro, Bren, etc. cl (YB16507) in Jan 88 and Oct/89. Holloway's company Oropex Minerals Inc performed additional trenching in 1988 and further trenching, detailed geochemical sampling and a VLF-EM survey in 1989. In 1989, construction was also started on a 430 m airstrip.
In Oct/91 the Mathew 1-6 and Matt 7-48 claims were transferred from Oropex Minerals Inc to Douglas Thomas. In Jan/92, D. Coxhead acquired a 50% interest in all of the Hugh, Ron, Sam, Sid, Mathew and Matt claims.
Restaked as Mel cl 1-10 (YB89280) by M. Holloway in May/97, who added Mel cl 11-42 (YB89354) in Jun/97 and carried out trenching, geochemical sampling and geological mapping later that year and drilled 3 holes (101 m) in 1998.
Capsule Geology
Gold occurs in a silicified shear zone cutting a small high-level rhyolite-granite intrusion on Shootamook Creek. The circular plug has domed and silicified the surrounding metasedimentary rocks, which consist of lower Cambrian limestone and calcareous graphitic schist, likely Tsaydiz Formation of the Windermere Supergroup based on extrapolation of mapping carried out to the south by Murphy (1987). Rhyolite dykes and sills, along with narrow veins of pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcedonic quartz extend from the plug into silicified, sericite-altered wall rock.
Trenching on the main showing in 1988 and 1989 exposed a metre-wide zone of brecciated rhyolite and quartz vein material with a matrix of silicified gouge. A sample of this fault material collected in 1988 returned 5.2 g/t Au and 1.25% As. Other samples collected during this period returned up to 6.65 g/t Au. The fault zone strikes northeast and dips moderately to steeply northwest and appears to be a normal fault with a small displacement. Total Erickson Resources collared all their holes on the west side of Shootammok Creek in order to test the fault zone at depth. All 6 holes missed the mineralized zone. Examination of the diamond drill core and further geological mapping suggests that the fault zone is offset at depth. Soil sampling and VLF-EM surveys returned anomalous values along a ridge located approximately 200 m to the east.
A second silicified fault zone, extends from the main fault zone, through old placer workings located to the southeast. A VLF survey carried out in 1989, outlined a 3 000 m long VLF anomaly overtop of the zone.
A second showing was located 213 m west of the main fault zone. It consists of an outcrop of sericite-altered rhyolite which returned assays up to 102.9 g/t Ag. Coincident VLF and arsenic soil anomalies in this area were explored with a 40 m long trench in late 1989.
Sampling of the main (Winnie) showing in 1997 indicated that gold grades increase with depth and that the enclosing metasediments are also mineralized, often returning higher grades than the enclosed vein. Drilling in 1998 on the main showing intersected silicified and altered granodiorite near the contact with the surrounding metasedimentary rock. Results of analysis of the core returned generally low gold values, one anomalous section (Hole Mel-X2) which contained up to 1.5 % pyrite and minor arsenopyrite returned a weighted average of 274.5 ppb Au over 3.05 m with a best interval of 1 896 ppb Au over 0.55 m. Due to problems with the drilling equipment, holes Mel-X1 and X3 failed to reach their targeted depth. Thus the holes failed to confirm the continuation of mineralization observed in hole Mel-X2.
